Hi
Just joined the forum and have a question.
I do not currently have an SLK, I have a Merc C220 Estate and a Mazda MX5.
However due to a dodgy left knee and hip it looks like I'm gonna have to give up the manual MX5 and get an auto.
The MX5 auto does not appeal, great fun as a manual but not so fun as an auto.
I've narrowed my search for a replacement down to either a BMW Z4 2.5si or a 230 or 300 SLK.
So a bit of background, I live in the Surrey Hills area of the south east of England, I have to commute to Canterbury in Kent about once every 2 weeks so all motorway driving. I do occasional (about once a month) trips to clients in the midlands and Wales but usually try to stick to A & B roads, longer drives but much less boring that the M ways, plus obviously a bit of local driving.

I enjoy kind of spirited driving but not kicking the arse out of it. On A & B roads when weather permits I always have the roof down.
When on M ways I like to be able to hear the radio, passenger etc.

Hope I've painted enough of a picture ?

So my question is what are the pro's & con's of the SLK ?

Money is obviously a consideration and is the £540 annual VED of the 350 versus the £320 VED of the 230 and the difference in fuel consumption worth it in terms of driving pleasure, bear in mind that although I like a bit of acceleration I rarely go much further north than the national speed limit plus VAT. ?

Has anyone out there owned/regularly driven both and can therefore provide a direct comparison ?

Looking forward to you views.

Now we run two R171's, a 350 & 55.

I'd say the 230 fits your needs. Especially in not looking for high top speed (though it is not a slouch).
Thoroughly enjoy lane chasing in our 230.

Make sure you check everything against our uying new/used guide.
If it is rust free, I think it'd hit your needs.

Hi, welcome from Wiltshire. I’ve just got my first SLK, Went for the 250d AMG Sport. Beautiful car, fantastic drive but also good economy if that’s a factor. Handles well and great to drive with verve in sport or manual mode or if you are chilling out on a motorway after a stressful day eco gives you a relaxed drive with oomph on hand if you need it. I have the same issues, knees and left hip so the auto is brilliant. Boot I space with the roof up is excellent and although it’s tricky to get at its pretty good with the roof down too. Love the air scarf and heated seats too, perfectly toasty when driving with roof down. Hope that helps, have a great Christmas

Get an early 55 - VED £315 - engines are bullet-proof and provide more smiles per gallon than the 4s and 6s. Seem to be holding their values well too! 30mpg on long runs.

Depends on the budget but you could also throw an early 350 into the mix as well, same tax band as the '55

Band K* 201-225 CO2 emission (g/km)
Single Payment = £315
12 Monthly Instalments = £330.75

*Includes cars with a CO2 figure over 225g/km but were registered before 23 March 2006. :nerd:

Not sure of the exact reg date but THIS 55 is a 2006 and has just been relisted for the second time, he's struggling to shift it, probs due to the mileage and/or colour and/or VED, Would make a nice motor for someone for occasional use.

Welcome to the forum, you will love it here!
I think the SLK will fulfill all your requirements, and you will be surprised how refined and quiet it can be when that’s what you need. It is a Merc after all, and behaves like a limo when you take your hooligan hat off.
