Decided to take the wheels off to do a bit of cleaning etc.

Jacked the car up, took out all the wheel nuts and guess what? Cannot remove the wheel. It is as tightly attached as it was before I took out the nuts. Heaven help me if I should ever get a flat tyre as I'll never be able to get the wheel off.

I tried hitting it, waggling it, kicking it with my heavy boots and even bashing it with a hammer (with some wood in between). Nothing.

Anyone got any tips?

If it's a front wheel, slacken the wheel studs, about half a turn, drop the car down off the jack and wiggle the steering wheel back and forth a few times. If it's a rear wheel, do the same, but rock the car back & forth, braking fairly hard. This usually frees them.

:confused:Changing a flat on a R171 is a challenge. Woolly's right on getting the wheels loose. Be careful not to rock the car off the jack. Carrying the flat tire is a chore, since getting it in the truck is a another challenge. Front seat is a option only if you're solo.

Like Woolly, I always back the lug bolts off about half a turn and then either turn the front's back and forth or reverse and hit the brakes a bit for the rears.

Do this before I even try to jack and remove 'em. I did use some Zinc anti-seize on the '55 stateside, so I'm going to try without shaking them loose next time...

I also had trouble getting mine off (I gave up in the end) when I was going to fit my HID's.....

So I fitted my HIDS, (without taking the front wheels off), and went to Tesco's to buy 2 cans of tyre weld, just in case I did get a puncture... lol

I think I'll have a go at Woolleys suggestion next time I need to take those front wheels off :)

I had this problem as well.

Some advice on using a hammer: get a rubber mallet and hit near the edge of the tire (for leverage). Look at the area where the wheel meets the hub. You should see a small space forming opposite of where you are hittting with the hammer. Rotate around the tire in opposing spots and eventually it should completely seperate from the hub. It's still a pain to lift off though.

I've put some copper anti-seize on the hub and haven't had a problem since.

I carry two tins of tyre weld. Bit of a bummer if you get a flat and the other half is occupying the passenger seat :)

I think MBrace will dispatch someone out to you. But I think there is a limit on the distance to be towed? No sure how far they would tow it.

I have AAA Premier which will tow any vehicle (including my RV) that I happened to be in (not just my own vehicle) for 100 miles without any additional charge.

VERY IMPORTANT ****** One thing to keep in mind........... IF you use the towing feature tied to your "car insurance".........just remember they keep a record of this on your "loss record" when it comes renew time (even if you change insurance, this still on your record and the insurance companies has a data base they can look and see). That is why I just use AAA. I have "free towing" feature on my car insurance, but I only use it if AAA does not show up for some reason which is very rare.

The UK AA doesnt have a limit on towing. They will take you and your car to either your destination or back home. Its a great service I pay around 15 UK pounds a month and that covers me in any car as a driver or a passenger

That is GOOD!!!

In the USA...........REGULAR AAA (not PREMIER AAA) will only tow the car or "light pick up truck" (not an RV) for only something like 3 miles. Beyond the 3 miles............IT WILL COST YOU BIG.

The cost of Premier AAA is obviously higher (significantly) compared to regular AAA. I figure if my car needs towing to somewhere, it will definitely be more than 3 miles.

The wheel is stuck to the hub due to dissimilar metals corrosion.

Prevention is antiseize compound applied to the mating surface.

Mercedes has recently changed their specification for doing this.
And note that the use of anti-seize on the lug bolts is still prohibited and not needed if you observe correct torque.

On that note I tried to fit the 17 inch wheel and tyre off my wifes Astra in the boot today. Even with the flat bit from the puncture, there was no way would it fit in the boot of the SLK. So no chance with one of its own wheels. Bit of a worry if you dont have unlimited rescue cover. Imagine A boot full of suitcases. She who must be obeyed in the passenger seat. Miles from home and a puncture. Thank goodness for the AA :)

Thanks for this tip Woolly.

Two rears came off without protest, but the front near-side seemed to be stuck fast, no amount of pulling or pushing worked. Used your tip this morning and it worked like a charm. Just need to remember NOT to move the wheel back and forth over a super smooth surface, like a painted gararge floor! There wasn't enough resistance there to do the trick, but a tarmac surface like the driveway solved the problem. Wheels are now all super clean, and I took the time to wire brush the rust away from the hubs and apply the thinnest smear of grease...hopefully I will avoid the problems in future.

IMHO the WORST part of my SLK55 is the spare tire system.


Two days after I got my SLK home I decided to make sure I had all the spare tire items (jack, pump, etc.). When I got to the spare I noticed that it had been removed and replaced up-side-down. I couldn't budge it from its cavity. I took out the valve stem but it didn't help. I took it to my local MD dealer and they removed the aft trim piece to get the spare out. Apparently you have to use some implement to compress the spare after use.


So now the spare is correctly installed, however, it appears to still take a two men and a small boy to get it out. As a result I have purchased a Green Slime tire inflation kit. But I still can't get to the jack or any of the other items under the spare.


Yes I am a AAA member and since the SLK has been consistently serviced at MB it still retains the MB Roadside Assistance, however, that is still a poor substitute for a good spare. If I am out for a nice Sunday drive with my lovely wife to some of the local wineries and on one of the back roads and I get a puncture too close to the sidewall to use the tire repair kit. Now what was a nice day out turns into a three hour wait and tow.


Why couldn't the MB engineers have added 4 mm to the circumference of the spare tire well to at least make its removal easy. Heck, even my 99 Miata had fully inflated space saver spare and that wasn't a particularly large car!!

One small job will help you to get it out and back in. Take the wheel out and the poly tray At the back of the poly tray where there is a centre cut out Slice the poly down at 45 degrees it makes the wheel much easier to feed the wheel in. I can get mine in and out easily now
