Thinking about buying an SLK...

Currently own:

  • 2015 BMW 328Xi estate sport wagon
  • 2011 Mercedes Benz E550 Coupe
  • 2006 Chevy Silverado 2500HD Turbodiesel 4X4 Crew Cab
  • 1969 Beach Racing Cars Mk5-C Formula V
  • 1967 Triumph Spitfire under restoration...
  • 1964 Triumph Spitfire race car
  • 1952 MG TD
Just sold a very well developed '73 MGB. Looking for a sports / touring car a bit more comfortable, etc, than the MGB.

Considering the following:

  • SLK350 (2005, 2006) $10-14k
  • Boxster (2002,2003) $10-14k
  • Carrera 996 (2000, 2001) $12-15k
  • 350Z $9-11k
I joined because I'm going to look at a 2005 SLK350 a couple hours away. 113,000 miles, full service history, one owner, and best of all: Six Speed transmission. I'm familiar with the seven speed automatic, I've got it in my E550 Coupe. Pretty good, but not what you would call "sporting"...

I'm not too keen on buying something with such high miles, we typically buy new (except for the vintage cars...) But it seems a bit tough to find an SLK with the manual transmission.

Thoughts, suggestions, insights or opinions based on actual ownership of the cars mentioned?

Thanks....

Ted

Welcome.
Mileage wouldn't put me off if maintenance and condition up to scratch.
Sure you don't want an SLK 55 given your fleet?

Welcome from the Sacramento Valley SLK Enthusiasts!

We have a couple of manual transmission SLK's in our Sac. Valley SLK Enthusiasts car group. Mostly older ones 98-01 and they love them. Our group may tour Napa next month and Sonoma is very near. Call me if you like!

Howdy from Calgary, that is a very nice collection you have. 113K is getting up there, but if it indeed has a proper maintenance history, and the body is rust free, then it is most likely still a keeper. I do love my SLK, but I also very much like the Porsche line. I have never been a fan of the Nissan stuff, but that is most likely just my 'snobby euro-car attitude' talking. If I was buying used, from your list, it would come down to the car in the best overall condition for the money. Good luck with the hunt!
