So the email(s) came in over the weekend from the MB dealer pitching me on getting the "Extended Coverage" (warranty). She gave me 2 sets of prices (emails) as she forgot we purchased a 55. Here are the numbers-

FIRST EMAIL:

The MB warranties are: 5 year/100,000 miles for $2150.00
-----------------------6 year/100,000 miles for $2500.00
-----------------------7 year/100,000 miles for $3000.00

The coverage would continue since it is Factory coverage with a $0.0
Deductible. If you are going to travel less miles we do have an after
market warranty also very good that gives you more time than miles.

I will put a brochure in the mail for you.

SECOND EMAIL:

I need to make a correction! You have an AMG. The prices are higher
for AMG's:

5/100,000 $3000
6/100,000 $3575
7/100,000 $4880

So I re-spin the probably tired questions-

This seems kinda high for the extended warranty on the 55.
Does any dealer discount the MB extended warranty? I know there are Honda dealers that discount the Honda Ext. warranty since it's all profit but I don't know if MB has any dealers in the US that do that.

Could I work a deal with a salesman on this like the car or am I stuck working through the "finance" person(s)?

Good question!

My take on these extended warrantees is that they are especially good for the dealers since they get paid up front for any service work that is needed in the future. The owner gets to pay whether or not the car ever needs service that would be covered. You can be sure that M-B has spent thousands of man-hours reviewing the service stats and records on all these warrantees. They would not offer them if they weren't virtually guarenteed to make a profit on them.

I plan on keeping my SLK 55 but I will pay for any work that becomes necessary at the time of service. I will also have the option to take the car to a very reliable Mercedes mechanic who very well might take better care of the car than the dealer does.

I don't own an AMG at this time but agree with reallife.

I'm with etyu and reallife.

Extended warranties are for profit only (with a few extremely expensive exceptions that really do cover everything) unless the warranty covers everything right down to wheel bearings and brake pads forget it.

There is a discount on extended warranty if you buy it within 1 year of the purchase of your vechicle. Something like:
within 1 year, 80% discount
within 2 years, 90% discount.
Not quite position on the precentage of discount but I am sure there is something similiar to that.

:tu:I'm also in agreement here. No extended warranties for me. They're not worth the cost. I normally don't keep my vehicle long enough. Several exceeded 100,000 miles. I've had plenty of new and used vehicles in my life and ZERO extreme out of pocket repair cost.

I agree too.

Im Germany the extended warranty costs for a 350 about 500 Euro for 2 more years. I offered my dealer an agreement - because he´ll get my car into his garage he should pay the half of the bill. He disagreed. Then I declined the friendly offer of MB.

BTW: look into the terms of the warranty. It´s not a full warranty!

The dealer is mailing me more information, but I'm still undecided.

Labor (labour for you Dan) rates seem to be around $100/hr for the Ford dealer here and I'd *assume* Mercedes Benz to be equal or more. It doesn't take much to pop a grand in a basic service like fluids or a brake job. I know those are not covered, but the work on that roof intimidates me down the road.

I have to say the $4-$5k for the longer warranty did give me a buzz kill about getting it.

Maybe this is all moot if i do the ecu and other upgrades anyway...

MB are normally around the $100 mark per hour mate yeah.

The services are not covered as you know and the most likely parts on fail on the roof are seals they are not covered anyways because its wear and tear.

I would use the money for mods if your thinking about doing stuff to it.

What I have done is never buy the extended warranty up front. Wait until the car is almost out of warranty, then buy it if you're gonna keep the car. Then, consider a bumper to bumper warranty, even one offered by a different company. It helps being partnered to a lawyer, to check out all the language first.

The warranties have been good to me, except for Mitsubishi. I bought the extended warranty then sold the truck to my dad. 50 miles past the end of the exteneded warranty it threw a rod out of the side of the engine and they refused to cover it. He bought a new engine and 12,000 miles later that died.

However, on other cars, the extended warranties have been wonderful. I think we replaced six amazing Mercedes "Slam-Matic" transmissions on the 1983 300SD. My one car had every port fuel injector replaced under extended warranty after the shop jammed an air cleaner in makeing it bend and exposing 1/2 inch dip. The shop wasn't going to admit they caused the problem.

There is no doubt if I am going to keep this car that I will get an extended warranty. MB's are just too unreliable, and the top motors look expensive to replace. I just saw an R170 towed away with the top stuck halfway open.

Heh, i guess when the roof fails, i'll just remove all the pumps and latches, bolt it down, and call it a black series mini. hahaha...

Then it would loose 80% of the reason I got it, so then I'd sell it and go get a Porsche Caymen S instead. More luggage capacity, and that mid-engine handling!

Its a nice car but pricey when you start to tick with the options, want everything in leather as you remove plastic trim here and there with Porshce's Exclusive dept which is like Designo.:)

Mid engine okay but the design? And 6k Euro more expensive than a Boxster. Unbelievable. For me: Cayman = Never

That is the biggest reason I extended my warranty. Frankly without it I would have a second thought each time I dropped the top and that would sorta ruin the experience.

It may be that the warranty expires worthless, but for the top alone, I thought it worth it.

A well maintained vario-roof will last for a very long time remember its just a soft-top setup but using metal parts and think how many older vert's you see around.

Its not overly complicated one pump and 2 relays control the opening and closing motion with 2 rams and a set of microswitches most parts are easy to replace, my recommendation would be take the money you would spend on the warranty and either use it for mods or place it in a bank account where it can sit and gain interest then should you need any if it you have it on hand not just for the car but any issues that might spring up on you.

A lot can be replaced for $4880, just for general info the most common failures on the roofs are seals (not covered) and microswitches that are but cost under £10 to replace and take less than an hour, you could even change them at home if you wanted without any factory tools.

Yeah, I have a problem with the $20,000 "Porsche Premium" especially since they they are no longer an exotic car manufacturer like Ferrari, but a full line company like Benz.

However, mid-engine is mid-engine. I love it! It's like the whole world pivots under your ass. Best of all, you can steer with the throttle.

I have been in a Caymen S, doing four wheel drifts over 170 MPH. It's heaven! Not open roof Ferrari heaven, but you can drive it to the store and don't go insane when it's dinged.

However, Caymen only when considering a fixed roof car, as was the post I responded to. In reality, it would the new Lotus Esprit. Dreamy!

Actually of late I have been considering abandoning my search for a descent air cooled 911 Turbo, and going with a small first generation MR2 with the second generation turbo engine. That might be some laughs on the track!

Sort of like a fast FIAT X1/9 that will work for longer then 2 weeks.

Doug -- Been off line for sometime but I always get the extended warranty -- I used to love to work on cars and have done my share over the years ---but one trans failure will pay for it our's has 13 sensor's just for the ABC not to mention the pump etc and my arms and hands don't bend like they used to and our Merc dealer charges 100.00 per hour labor you can't beat proper and timely maintenance but things do happen and the more precisely engineered a machine is the longer it SHOULD last --- but I think most people who have factory HOT RODS tend to drive them to the hilt but I look at it as insurance just like on the house hope it never burns down but?????

The Cayman S looks gorgeous, It reminds me of the late 70-90's Porsche 928 GTS.

A Coilover system with some na boltons and lighter wheels wont hurt, It could be untouchable in a small twisty track.
