Is it worth getting the codes pulled on my new to me 2001 SLK230 if there are no lights on in the control panel?

It seemed everyone on this board believes getting the codes pulled is a must when you buy a used car. But, if there are no lights on, is it really worth the cost? I don't want to spend too much on my car, but I'm taking it in for an oil change and brake fluid flush and will have the codes pulled if its important. The indy I'm taking it to wants $80 to pull the codes. So, what do you guys think, should I do it?

The only thing that shows on the control panel is that it is 25,000 miles overdue for service (I believe because the prior owner didn't clear this when they had service done by a relative).

OBD codes can be pulled for free at most auto part stores. Star codes you will either have to go to a sympathetic indy (always a good time to start a positive relationship) or the stealership. So, you can use this as an excuse to evaluate that shop and see how good they are with dealing with a perfectionist (you ARE one, right?) BEFORE having a real problem.

Are you saying that most indy's will pull them for free, or that is worth paying an indy to pull them? If you are saying to pay an indy, does the $80 quote seem reasonable? Like I mentioned, I'm already planning to have him change the oil and brake fluid as well.

Is it worth this $80 just to know what the codes are, or is it not really worth it if there aren't any control panel lights on?

My 320 had no OBD2 codes or "lights" on control panel. It had 4 pages of stored codes. Yes, I think it would be worth $80 bucks, but ask him if he will cut you some slack on the price as part of the service. It is nice to know what has been going on with the car. Most Indys will not pull them for free, they have to pay for the SW and it takes them some time to do it. After all, they are trying to make a living.

Auto part stores can pull the codes for free. If you're buying used [regardless of make/model] wouldn't you take it in to get a full once over anyway? This is maintenance and prevention time. A code today could save you a very costly repair tomorrow. $80 is nothing compared to what the dealership charges.

Sounds like its worth doing the codes, but I guess I'm confused between OBD and Star. Is what could be pulled for free just the OBD codes? And, if so, is the Star worth the extra $80 or should I just have the free OBD codes pulled? From what Carolina said it sounds like they are very different, so I'm assuming the $80 is worth it? I get that $80 is a small amount of money relative to a major issue, but I'm trying to keep costs down as much as possible and just don't want to do something that isn't worth it.

The OBD2 codes you can pull are basic codes that cover the engine and transmission. You can buy a reader for 30 bucks that will get them. The MB specific codes cover the ABS, ESP, Airbags, Alarm system, PSE, Vario roof, Heating/cooling system, Multifunction control module, Instrument cluster, etc., etc., etc.

My indy pulled my codes for free, and even reset the HID present to YES. Refused to take any money, just said I should remember him for any "real" work. You can be sure that I will be going to him for anything, and not questioning his prices if they are anywhere near a fair price. I have already sent him 5 new customers who have reported his work is above reproach.

The chick is right. If you are not a tech yourself, or a savvy amateur, the money spent on a prepurchase inspection, is well invested insurance money.

I did a PPI at the Mercedes dealership, but they didn't pull the codes during it since there were no indicator lights on. That is why I was curious if having the codes pulled was worth the expense just a few weeks after the PPI given no lights have come on.

It's worth it for the warm feeling about the history of the car.
I got mine inspected by an Indy, who did an hour's inspection, pull codes, etc, and provided a report of the bad points of the car for 66 GBP.
Money well spent.

Unfortunately, I don't know any other Merc owners I can recommend him to.

You can recommend him to me. A trip down to Somerset will take < an hour and I love visiting the area.

Happy to recommend him.
Avantgarde are based in Martock, just off the A303.

You may also find a closer indy by Googling "independent Mercedes xxx" where xxx is your nearest large town.

Just to update since this thread got pulled back up:

I had the codes pulled and......nothing. I guess the previous owner had them all erased. She had a relative that was a mechanic and she must have asked him to wipe them all. Sucks as now I have no idea what is going on with the car. Will they all start to reappear or once a code is whiped does the car not pull them back up?
