Hi all and Season's Greetings

I'm a new member and wondered whether anyone can anyone solve this mystery?

I recently purchased a 2003 R170 SLK with only 60,000 miles and in excellent bodywork condition. The engine sounds as it should, sweet with no bad noises. The seller sold it to me at a very reasonable price because, he said, it has a fault with the auto gearbox - "After the car is driven over 20 miles or so, the gearbox fails to work and the car will not go any further" he said.

I had the car shipped to me on a truck as I was too scared to drive it for fear of doing any further damage to the gearbox. However, I could not resist taking it for a short drive of just a couple of miles. The car drove superbly and the gearbox changed gear exactly as it should. The kick-down also worked perfectly.

However, I do not want to take it for a long drive for fear of getting stranded or doing damage to the gearbox.

Does anyone know what might be wrong? The seller was an engineer and although not a car mechanic, obviously knew what he was talking about regarding a gearbox fault.

I would be very grateful to hear from anyone who has had a similar gearbox problem or can solve this mystery.

Over to you!

Welcome from Madrid....

Please update your car and location details to help us help you better in the future.

I agree on the comment of getting the filter and oil changed on the gearbox to start with.

Hi there and welcome
I have also recently purchased a slk 320 with 79k on a 2002 plate and the nice gentleman I bought the car off was an ex RAC and he told me that the slk should have a gearbox fluid change at around 80k , he even supplied me with 5l of top grade gearbox oil but I have not got round to having it done yet .
