Hi Guys

Firstly let me introduce myself, My name is Lee and I'm from South Africa. I have a 1999 SLK200 R170. I had her for close to 5 years now and love her to bits.

I have managed to save alot of money with the help of this forum so I would like to thank you guys for that.

In saying that I'm currently stuck with a problem with my leaking pump. I have read all the threads extensively and have purchased the O ring repair kit and followed the instructions to the T however I just can't get the cylinder apart. It just wont come apart(i have removed the C ring) I have tried the vice with a hammer and tapping it up slightly.

Soooo I'm hoping someone would have any further advise?

Hi Lee,

Welcome. I recently replaced the seal in a 2002 SLK. I don't really have any solution to your dilemma, but want you to know you are not being ignored.

My biggest problem was oil between the plastic and the molded fiber roof liner caused them to separate. It was a 'bugger' getting it to stick back. I used a spray glue. Baking soda was the final solution to drying the oil. It soaked up the oil and allowed the glue to stick.

Sounds like you removed your cylinder and put it in a vice. I rebuilt mine in the car. It really wasn't too difficult, but at one point, I needed some help to hold the cylinder still while I worked. I remember, with the pressure released in the trunk, just pushing it in and pulling it out until it came all the way out. The O ring was easy to replace.

I can't think of any reason it would fail to come out, except to speculate that the vice could put a bend in the cylinder. I hope that's not it.

Thanks for reply bud, I haven't put it in a vice yet its still attached to lines and hanging from roof. I can push the cylinder up and down fine but it stops at the top and wont come off no matter how hard I pull. Its as though the white part that holds/closes the cylinder is being held back.

Also I havent released the pressure though, would that be causing it?( I didnt think it would as i am able to push the cylinder shaft up and down fine).

I didn't spend a lot of time trying to understand it. When something worked, I moved on to the next step. I would certainly release the pressure, but it sounds like that isn't the problem. I do not recall anything having to align to get it to come out. I can envision an O ring coming apart and wedging it in, but that is a long shot. It could simply be the the O ring is intact and touching the groove at the top, stopping it. In that case you will just have to apply more pressure to get it out. You have a new O ring anyway.

I can't picture how you are applying pressure when trying to remove the cylinder. I remember a hole in the end of the shaft. Put a metal rod or a screwdriver through it to give you something to grip. Perhaps you are already doing that.

Again, this is purely speculative based on what I saw. Let us know when you learn the solution.
