This 1939 Porsche Type 823 “Dummy Tank” is a rare and interesting variant of the Type 82 Kubelwagen designed to fool distant enemies–presumably, the Germans would gather a squadron on the field in hopes of deterring attack. This one is believed to be a legitimate original, though its non-running engine is from a later VW. It looks to be very complete and restorable, and though agreed upon production numbers are hard to come by, all agree that very few were built. Find it here on eBay in Anaheim, California with reserve not met.

It’s hard to imagine that what is essentially a typical Kubelwagen with fake tank add-ons like a turret and track housings fooled anyone with a set of binoculars, but here it is anyway. The seller says this one is in “solid shape with no major rust,” and condition does appear to be quite good as photographed. Note the semaphore turn signal housings just aft of the side windows–indispensable equipment for any battle tank.

Here’s a look inside–no armor plating here, just a lot of thin gauge sheet steel that looks like it could easily be penetrated by a sharp stick, let alone small arms fire. Note what looks like an observer’s seat, complete with swiveling base and what appears to be an adjustable height mount.

Though not running, the vehicle is fitted with an air-cooled boxer four, albeit from a 60’s VW rather than the original KdF item. A gearbox is fitted as well, and may be original–the ad isn’t quite clear.

Just get a giant AMG Sticker to cover the "German Sign" on the back:grin::grin:
