Hello all,

I just purchased a 2005 R171 AMG and absolutely love it. However, I have found no way to turn off the lights in the foot well area when driving at night. It's a nice feature to have when you're getting in and out of the car, but it's quite distracting when you're driving down the freeway. I really don't want to be looking at my feet while driving, and it takes away from the 'coolness' of night driving.

anyone know of a solution??

I suppose they are changed to LED? (are they "white"?)
If they are, then you can change them to halogen and they will be barely noticable.

You can also turn them off in the main menu as far as I remember. (or STAR..)

Yep, they are LEDs and very white and bright. I've searched through every parameter on the menu but couldn't find anything on it. I will check on the halogen option though. Thanks for the tip!

I just talked to MB and they explained it's part of their 'ambient' lighting. No off switch. So - I think HYY's approach may be the next step...

On my 172, there is the ability to choose one of 3 setting for ambient lighting. The setting is on one of the screens in the driver information center, mid-console.
I don't know if the 171 has the same option....

As Hyy suggested: change back to OEM incandescent lamps, they will dim to nearly imperceptible levels when doors are closed, and brighten when doors are opened (presuming one has enabled cockpit lights to turn on when doors are opened using the overhead console controls).

As Eddy and others have pointed out, the ambient light system in teh R171 is designed for incandescent bulbs. LED's require such low voltage that they are not "dimmed" by the system, hence the always on appearance.

You can set the low level to "off" in StarDiag, but I doubt most dealers will do it..

Footwell Lights will not turn off

I have noticed that the footwell lights in my 2006 SLK55 AMG do not turn off. even after the car has been turned off for a an hour. Anyone else confirm this?

My R500 has a MB premium lighting package that has soft ambient lighting all over the interior. In addition to the footwells, the door handles are softly backlit, and the cup holders in the center console emit light so you can easily find them at night. In addition to the main cabin lights, there are map lights that seemingly come from nowhere. The source is really well hidden. They work great for reading without distracting the driver. The premium lighting touches extend all the way to the 3rd row. Personally I think Mercedes does this stuff really well. It's the backyard modders who destroy all the careful engineering by putting LED's in applications that weren't designed for them.

To tell you the truth, the footwell lighting in the SLK is so unobtrusive I never even notice it. But I wouldn't mind having some of the premium lighting package from the R500 in the SLK.

I just swapped out mine for LED bulbs which work great but they too stay dimly lit after the car and everything else is turned off.
