I need to change the rears on my SLK 350 with AMG sport package - Michelin Sport 245/40/ZR17 - and as the fronts have 6mm left on them - Michelin Sport 225/45/ZR17, I am currently planning to keep them on.
I have read a number of posts and have a few questions for the experts out there on the assumption that I keep the fronts:
1 - Should I get Michelins on the rears?
2 - If so, do they need to be Summer tires or could I go with A/S on the rear and Summer on the fronts?
3 - If Michelin/Summer - Primacy HP or Pilot Super Sport?
4 - If Michelin/AS - Pilot MXM4, Primacy MXM4 or Pilot Sport AS+?
5 - If they needn't be Michelins on the rear - any recommendations to go with the fronts?

The SLK has only been Summer driven to date - but I would like to get it out on the odd cold dry day in the future but would not be planning to drive it in the snow (that's the Volvo's domain...).

All and any advice would be greatly appreciated.

had michelins all the time but wear too fast. now have continental dws

We need to know a bit about your driving style/habits. Do you use it as daily driver. Do you track it. Do you just keep with traffic flow. Do you ever spin the rear tires? Do you take corners hard? Do you want the tires to last long. Do you care about noise?

If you still have originals on a 2005 you are not using the tires hard and anything will work so maybe mention how many miles on fronts and backs. I have always kept fronts and backs the same tire tread on performance cars but maybe not needed depending on how you drive. SLKs are dual purpose: they can be driven "spirited" but there are lots of ownersw who just "Sunday" drive and show and shine. Maybe a good theme for a poll.

Like Banks, I put the Conti DWS on my 2005 SLK 350 [not AMG]. Pleased with the dry and rain performance to date, quiet, too early to say on wear, but their rep is that they wear significantly longer than the Michelins. My experience with Michelins [LTX on a truck, Pilots and others on M-B sedans] has been good, but the Conti DWS seem to be a preferred option on the SLKs, reason I bought a set about six months ago.

Hankook Ventus V12's on my '350, very please with both price and performance, not enough miles on 'em to say w/regard to wear.

Same tread pattern front to rear is great, but IMHO over rated.

My michelin primacy HP was still good over 43K until I get tired of the noise level. PS2 is good and now replace by PSS. The only thing with Mechelin is they are over price. But they have a good customer service incase you need them. If you have to replace one tire incase you have a flat with diffferent thread design ,you can do it on the rearonly. Having different thread on the front may affect handling and steering.

Daily ("leisure") drive - Summer only..
I don't track it.
Definitely exceed the traffic flow....
Rarely spin the the rears.
Don't take corners hard (lots of quiet/straight roads in rural Ontario...).
Not too worried about length of use/noise - but, as mentioned, would like to get out in the dry Winter days.

Following RxDiesel and Banks's replies I further checked out the Conti Extreme Contact DWS (almost a 1/3 less in cost than the PSS in Canada ) and this might be the way that I go (swapping out all 4 tires). For the Conti converts, what has been your experience in the cold/light snow with them?

I'm also starting to look at replacing my rear tires. What's the difference between DW and DWS (yes I know the S is for snow...). Gary, tire rack has a Q&A that sort of matches what you do/want with tires. I'm sure they have an installer in Port Huron - down over night save big bucks. We also have a new sponsor Discount Tire that has a similar arrangement (ship to installer).

From what I've read the Conti DWs are a good choice. Don't ever consider Rikens (Michelin product) - super noisy and not that great as far as wear or grip imho.

I would look for something less expensive than those Michelins or maybe the Primacy. We have Primacy on a "S" series. I had vey expensive Goodyear on my Corvette and they were terrible. Your problem is the fronts are summer and you want to run all season on the back so the tread pattern will be a lot different. For your driving style I don't think it would be a problem. I am using Toyo Proxes and they have a good UTQG and are quiet. I am considering the Conti for my next change depending on the results here.

:biglaugh:Other "S" words other than snow! DW - performance tire while the DSW is a all season tire.

From what I've read the Conti DWs are a good choice.
When I was looking for wheels and tires for my Lexus IS last year, I found the Continental DSW & DWs highly rated and in short supply. I wanted the DSWs, but they were out of stock every where I checked (online). I settled on the DWs.

Notwithstanding the whole No Japanese Tires on an SLK debate, I recently had Yokohama Avid Envigors on a sports sedan and loved them. I know of one person with them on an SLK - perhaps he'll chime in with his experience.

25,000 Km since new - so partly the reason to consider changing all 4 as they are all now 7+ years old.....

I don't have near the experience of my esteemed fellow SLK owners and have found that most of them love the Continentals. I have no expereince with the Contis but had to replace the tires on our SLK when we bought it last year. During my search for information I found some folks who liked the Pirelli PZero tires. I went with them and have been happy with their performance as a daily driver in Arizona where our summer temps can reach 100 degrees F with winter temps below freezing. Just my two cents worth.

7 years old? Personally, I'd get 4 tires as 7 years is "old" for a tire. And yes, my SLK has DWS's and I love them. We had a VERY mild(almost non-existant) Winter this year, having only 3 1" snows. The ESP only kicked on 2-3 times and the ABS once or twice(my SLK is my daily driver). The tires offer terrific dry traction for an AS tire and the damp/wet traction is very good too. I've gotten 17k+ miles on the tires(they were on the car when I bought it, so don't know when they were put on), and the rear "S" finally wore off this Spring. I'm very impressed with the wear of the tires. Also, TireRack has done comparison tests, and the DWS is rated the #1 tire in it's "group".

I heartily recommend the DWS :tu:

there are cases that old tires may be ok outside but they rot insde. When buying new tires may sure to check the date the tires was manufactured.

I read/heard the same and at an MB service last week I got them to specifically check the tires due to their age - their recommendation was to only change the rears (to Michelin PSSs to go with the front Michelin PSs) and that the fronts were fine despite their age.
However, the more that I think about it and the more that you guys respond, the more that I am leaning to replacing all 4 with A/Ss - with DWSs top of the list (next comes the Canadian vs US purchase dilemma...).

What's the dilemma Gary? For the savings, take the Mrs down to Port Huron for dinner, stay over and come back with new shoes - the new 48hr limit will cover them nicely (if you declare them).
