Greetings folks.....This is my first post and I hope it is passed along w/o error.
I recently purchased my first Mercedes (2005 SLK350). I'm looking forward to being a member of this forum because I've never owned a vehicle manufactured outside the USA before and I became curious about German technology.......to add it to my mechanical understanding.

My current driver is a Triple Crown winning 1959 Corvette that I completely rebuilt myself from the ground up!

I bought my SLK very cheaply because the convertible top did not function at all.......and.....of what use is a convertible automobile top that won't go up and down! Now that I resolved that issue and others (after extensive learning!).....I've moved on to the next item on my list.....and I need help!

I decided to convert my headlights from the factory incandescent bulbs (high and low beams) to LED. I completed the bulb swap.......and low and behold......the new LED bulbs simply flash on and off on at about a 10 second interval. I then read a little bit about LED conversions and purchased some resistor type devices to put in series with the new bulbs....no help.

One thing to understand about me.....I have an engineering degree but my knowledge of power and controls is very weak indeed, so go easy on me.....I only understand that if I tie a knot in an electrical cord.....it won't let the the electrons through and the light will go out!!

I'm getting frustrated and ready to return to my old bulbs!

Thank you in advance for your help!

Welcome from the Midlands

Hi from South Nottingham

I have changed the front side lights and all four indicators plus the reversing lamps with LED.
See some links below in my footer.
I couldn't get my Front Fog lamps to work with LED, they also flashed like you say, with or without resistors.
Maybe try a Xenon set up like the 55 has?

The headlights on the R171 are of the "Projector" design & are still very poor even with the Philips X-TremeVision 130% brighter H7 bulbs....

I converted My R171/350 with a "Canbus" HID kit:
>> UK HID's Direct: https://www.hids-direct.co.uk/h7-35w-canbus-pro-hid-xenon-conversion-kit/

> Seen fitted here:

So any H7 LED would also need to be "Canbus" compatible, so not to get the flashing.
But the problem with H7 LED's is fitting the complete bulb into the Headlight unit & getting the dust cover back in place?

I managed to convert My R171/350 front fog lights to LED, but took a fair size resister pack to trick the MB electrics into not flashing the bulb....

Thanks to all who responded to my initial thread but.......I've decided to scratch the whole idea of going to LED or even HID (because of the high temperatures involved) and return to the factory halogens and....to live with the poor lighting.

I had a 2009 350 with halogens, I upgraded to HID and put in error cancellers that were provided by the vendor of the HID. The HIDs actually generate less heat than the halogens, and I used 55 W, not the 35 W that was recommended.
