Hey guys

So many of you will likely think I’m an idiot but here goes ...I’m 24 and my first car will be a 2006 SLK350. 170k mileage. Automatic transmission. It has been used by a car dealer and well maintained etc. I am aware that servicing/parts are expensive...can anyone give me a rough annual figure? I wanted this because I can pay it off in a year or two and it will give me the experience I’ve always wanted - 1) a Mercedes-Benz and 2) an SLK specifically, as well as help build my credit (moved to the US from the UK 3 months ago as a permanent resident and my credit card has been building my credit well so far). I just long for the enjoyment and style. My personal opinion. I have no mechanical skills whatsoever however I am going to learn from my Father-in-law the easy things like oil changes etc. I am of course willing to learn more - I’m very good with computers (both software and hardware) and I tend to learn things quite fast, I think anyway! Hopefully this car will be good for me.

Opinions? Really thankful to have found this forum by the way. Also, if anyone has any idea of things I am likely to encounter in terms of problems and their cost, please do add them!

Be sure the engine does not have a balance shaft issue. ( unlikely at 170000 ) at that kind of mileage you are going to start getting niggling little faults that could place a load on your wallet. When last was the gearbox oil changed? Wheel bearings up front? rotors and pads? Shock absorbers. The headlights must have started to fade. Have they been polished, what are the reflectors like. What are the seals on the roof cylinders like? what condition are the brake lines in. A lot to consider.

The good news is that maintaining an SLK is generally not too expensive. There are outlyers. ( Balance shaft or front disks on the first 55 amg's ) but generally annual maintenance, short of anything breaking is doable in your own garage and parts are reasonably priced. Even when something needs a propper garage there are indy's about that are reasonable.

I'm now in to my 12th year of SLK ownership and to date I have not had a single OMG bill on 4 cars.

Oh and BTW my son bought his 350 at 23. 60000 miler in nice condition. Great to see him with his dads smile on his face when he drives off! :)

Find out what tyres the car has on it and budget for a set of rears every 18 months and fronts every 2 years or so. Disk pads every 2 years as a budget. Go to an independent mechanic and get a quote for a regular oils, filters and checkover service. One a year.

Remember that it is 12 years old. Some things fail on any car of that age.

Make sure that the roof is ok.
Can be cheap and/or expensive to fix.

Hey folks

Thanks a lot. Especially to nimbusgb for your advice on questioning the owner!

I believe I have updated my profile now - thanks for the pointers (all of them haha). If I’m still missing anything, please let me know and I’ll gladly fix it.

Really feeling this SLK. I’ve done some research and the W212 seems to get great reliability ratings but I still long for the SLK!
