Has anyone ventured into the aftermarket exhaust market or has anyone mod their exhausts yet?

I can't seem to find many aftermarket vendors for our car. Does anyone recommend anything?

Remus does exhausts for us. What do you guys think?

My other option is to delete the resonator. If anyone has done so please send me a sound clip :)

My best choice is Eisenmann but you need to have some $ for that =)
Edit: Nevermind, yours is R172 =) Missed that. But does Eisenmann make exhausts for 172? That would be nice!

Hi there

I had the resonator delete done and a cross-pipe fitted. I drove the SLK55 for 2 weeks and could not stand how uncivilized the sound was, especially on hard acceleration gear change. It was horrible. Removing the resonators and fitting the cross-pipe introduced a rasping sound to the exhaust as well.

There are a few clips on YouTube where people actually ask if anyone can identify the strange rasping sound from the exhaust after you rev the engine and let go of the accelerator pedal.

Luckily I kept my parts and ensured to pay a bit more so that the exhaust shop kept the original mountings in place to return to stock.

It was a total waste of money and in my opinion I now have a much more respectful view of the exhaust system. The AMG engineers have done a great job, making it very difficult to improve on.

D O N 'T D O IT !!!

Hope this helps.

Cheers, Mich

Thanks for the info, but mine isn't an AMG. I'll keep that in mind. I think I will try the resonator delete to hear how it sounds, and replace them if it gets out of control on my M276 engine. The good thing about doing resonator delete is that its relatively cheap to do and revert.

I just want it a little bit louder.

Remus might not get you the sound you are looking for. They do make quality products. Have you check Piecha? I know when the r171 first come out, they were one of the first few companies to make exhaust systems for the SLK. Supersprint was also quick to make a new exhaust for the SLK, they are expensive and sounds only a little better than OEM.

do you have any links to videos of the exhaust with those modifications?

Why diminish a premium brand car and make it into the sort of juvenile boy racer you see belting round the roads of housing estates?
Worse is that ugly clumsy diffuser & the empty square moulding in the centre. There has to be a more subtle mature approach to making the car sound and look more sporting.

Not sure about your comments on subtlety and maturity....

That is not the only diffuser on the market.

My exhaust is really quiet unless, I floor the accelerator and I'd like to get something with a bit more noise without having to drive it hard. It is quite possible to do this without, ending up with a car that sounds like a boy racer. The 55 is a lot more noisy than mine is and I doubt that it would be considered immature or boy racer.

Am going to get CKS to fit their paired double outlet system and AMG diffuser. I love the aesthetics and they claim a deeper exhaust note and advise against removing the central resonator. Their website has sound-bites and the details. About a 5 hour job and around £1000 TBC.
Unable to find a UK alternative to this option. Pity because I was hoping Borla did a system which transformed the sound of an early MX-5 I once owned.

Hi oldmercman, mind if i ask how loud is the CKS exhaust? I came across chrome-tec sport exhaust, but im curious to know how loud it is? Perhaps its the same as piecha exhaust but just called it differently?? If anyone has installed after market pls feel free to chime in as im dying to know and planning to buy it this summer(i like it really deep loud but not raspy and drone).

Also another question is....is it a MUST to change rear diffuser if i did installed aftermarket exhaust??? I kinda think so but since im here on the forum why not ask for wisdom lol

Thank you thank you in advance folks as im looking forward to this coming summer should be fun modding !!! Yeahh!!!

So would that be the "Piecha" system they sell (as pictured above) - don't see any others.

On the CKS site, they specify them as Piecha. I was wondering if oldmercman was buying something not listed on the web site as he appeared to be against the Piecha gear pictured in jameslk55's post.

Piecha does seem expensive but CKS do seem a proper set up and the sound-bites are convincing. I agree with their suggestion of fitting an AMG diffuser as the exhaust tip apertures EXACTLY match. If existing diffuser left the asymmetrical shaped apertures for the OE tips will be at odds with new tips and thus very obvious corners have ben cut.
I checked out VORTEX website and visited a local distributor who were just an ordinary suburban back street garage who will make up a VORTEX system for any car. Was not convinced I would get a careful professional job & mechanic seemed too keen to tell me how he has a system on his very boy racer MW Compact - wow!!
Will get an exact quote from CKS and anticipate installation end March.
