It's been a long while since I posted but this has me stumped. First a quick update. After 45 years in the sunshine of northern Virginia, I moved back to my little hometown in western New York State where industrial-sized snowblowers are far more prevalent than SLK's. But not a day of sunshine passes without top-down joy, rare as those days are here. 110,000 miles on it now and still getting thumbs-up from the locals.

From this little town, virtually everywhere worth driving to is at least 20 miles away. Happily, almost all of that is interstate and at an average pace of 70-75. But recently I was at 70+ when the car experienced a sudden "clunk" and began to slow because it shut down the cruise control and displayed both a check engine and ESP inoperable message. Concerning.

At the first opportunity, I pulled into a parking lot and retrieved the basic OBD scanner I keep in the car. It showed nothing about the ESP. When I restarted, the error messages were gone and I've had nothing like it since. The ESP shutoff button works as it was intended so the mystery continues. The nearest dealer is 75 miles away and I have no faith in the local F-150 specialists to noodle this one out. So I turn to the real experts. What to do, if anything.

And while you're at it, please offer some advice on new shocks. I've replaced engine and transmission mounts but I'm wagering that the shocks are probably overdue for replacement. Not quite as smooth as I recall, especially on these weather-distressed roads. As always, I'm delighted to see that Jeff and the gang are still keeping the lights on in here to keep the rest of us on the road. Thanks.

and you also said

'basic' obd scanner... so you might need to find someone with a star system for a true reading of codes

Transmission problems solved with a restart of the car. That sounds a bit like the infamous conductor plate issue.
One of the input signals for the ESP control unit is Y3/8n4, part of the TCM,has something to do with hydraulics afaik. So that might explain the ESP message.
Might mind you,so you could consider taking Jeff's advice and have the car scanned by someone with DAS and that knows how to use it. Trip to the dealer?
Or wait if the problem returns. If it is the conductor plate problem it will return...... 😁

How reassuring it is to have Jeff still nagging at me. It just wouldn't be worth my membership if that goes away. And while I'm at it, I offer one of the regrets I have about moving 300 miles north of the old homestead was losing the proximity to @mchild who was a pleasant drive away and a delightful friend and help with his diagnostics software and always a smile. Mark, I miss you.

While I hope it's a one-time problem as Jeff suggests, thanks to @Sneaky Pete for what to watch. Thanks again.

Back on this thread again and hoping someone in the forum can refer me to a good mechanic within 20 or 30 miles of me to address this ESP problem. Same thing happened again but this time at only 40 mph. Closest dealer is 75 miles. And it all got more complicated ten days after the original post when I turned my second car, a 2016 Acura, over to a local garage for service. Their mechanic totaled the car on a test drive! Insurance paid handsomely but it ain't the time to be forced to buy another car. Worse yet, I couldn't coiunt on the SLK to be reliable enough to fill in while that was going on. Please: are there any reliable places to take the 280 within 20-30 miles of Zip 14810?
