Some auto parts stores have code readers that will give you the codes and what is the problem. Some will do it free or charge a very small amount. one time an indy did mine and fee paid was applied to the cost of the repair. May have the code read and then reset the CEL and drive the car to see if it come on again. If it does that a reading to make sure it is the same problem.

Call your local Auto Zone to see if they scan codes for free. They will give you a printout receipt of the general code/problem. The plug-in port is located underneath the steering wheel but on the left side. I eventually bought my own scanner to save myself a trip.

Agreed - purchase the reader

I agree.I bought a reader about 2 years back -from Auto Zone. They had several models, I picked one in the middle and seem to remember it cost something like $30. Also, as suggested above, the first step is to determine what the code(s) mean and note them down, then re-set to see if they come back. Even my mechanic does this...

ENGINE light problem

Thank you everyone who replied to my engine light on problem.

It went off today when I went out for a ride....I guess the best thing to do is whit until it happens again and then take it to a Auto Zone, I most likly will buy a code reader for my shop. Thanks again, Jim:tu:

It saves the code even ifit is not burning. Once the light comes on it saves the code that caused it to come on. The reader will pick up the saved codes.

Driving home from a short highway trip the cel came on. I got home and parked it for a while but it's still on. The oil level is fine, temp reading is normal and car starts and runs perfect. I checked and the gas cap is tight, I haven't checked the air filters. Is there someone in Canada who sells a good code reader that will work on a 2008 280. We don't have Auto Zone here. Maybe Canadian Tire????

gas cap could be tight but the rubber seals around it might be worn.

Does the low fuel warning light come on and the tank is not low with the CEL? If it does that means the gas cap is not sealing the system. A air leak will cause the CEL and low fuel light to come on. If this is the case get a new gas cap. If not getting low fuel time to look for other problem, get the codes read to narrow down what to look for the CEL.

No the low fuel light does not come on early but I might know what the problem is. I always leave the cluster set on the ipod and not the kilometer and tripmeter setting. Tonight I started it up to see if the error message has cleared up and it is still there. When I scrolled through the menu I noticed a service b in 24 days notice. That wasn't there a week ago but I haven't been looking either. Is the check engine light related to the service notice?

I put a wee bit of lithium grease on the gas cap seal and the cel stayed on but when I filled the car with gas it went out. Self healing I guess. Checked with the dealer I bought it from and they didn't do an oil change prior to me buying it. It is a year this August since the oil and filter were changed (only about 5000 kilometers). Found a good mechanic here who can do it for me for less than the $450.00 the dealer quoted for the b service. Air filters, I have been reading about the green air filters sold on the slk store web site. Are they a good idea, any potential problems using them? I'm going to keep an eye on the Canadian Tire flyer for a good scanner for the next message I get.

B service is more than an oil change, Usually it is brake fluid change, cabin air filter plus oil and filter. If you are at 40,000 miles you add trans fluid change to the above.

They did say they would perform several checks but the only parts being changed are. Oil and filter and the air filters. Cabin air filter was another $100.00 which seems ok as the filter is more than that on the slk store. I will do the air and cabin filters myself. No mention of brake fluid change. This car is a standard transmission.

I know you pay more in Canada than USA but 450 for oil and filters sounds very high.
Yes it is quite high. I'm reading about the Mitivac oil extractor now, maybe I'll do my own oil change as well. Is it best to use a genuine merc filter or is there a green one of those???

If oil I would think MB filter, for cabin MB or after market, engine do a search on green filters, many pros and cons, other wise MB or aftermarket. Check prices I found the dealer was all most the same as aftermarket when purchased from MB parts department.

me too

Check Engine just came on today for me, we've been HOT here, over 100 for 2 weeks. Engine felt hotter than usual when I pulled into the garage. A clue to me was that the temperature gage for the OUTSIDE temperature soared from accurate at 102, to 130F in about 45 seconds, however my engine temperature gaged normally when I checked it while driving from the navigation deck.

THANKS TO THIS FORUM, I searched if others had this same scenario. Someone posted the exact issue and said after taking their SLK back to the dealer their "lower grille" was loose or unhinged or something of that nature due to hitting holes, or curb rubs etc. It is on the drivers side in this area that the external thermometer is also housed. SO, I got on my hands and knees to check and low and behold my "lower grille" was also popped out. I popped it back in by hand, and secured it by the tongue-and-groove fittings provided. I checked all my fluids (except transmission) and everything is perfect. No coolant or oil issues, filters are clean, hoses and belts are all pristine. Took her (Margoux Bouvier) out just now for another spin and the external temp is reading normal and not fluctuating at all. Check Engine light still on, but I am advised this "may" go off in a day or two after I driver her a further distance.

I will look into AutoZone's free check too just in case, and find out if anything is up. I will post an update here if or when the CE light goes bye-bye.
