I am a happy owner of a 2009 SLK55 AMG. I've had the car for 3 months now and like 3 weeks ago I heard a beeping sound and the message "Add 1 qt. engine oil at next refueling" appeared on the dashboard. I immediately went to an auto parts store, bought 1 qt, of oil and added it. Then I checked the oil level (on the dashboard, no dipstick in my car) and it was OK. Then after a week the same thing happened so I repeated the procedure. Today, a week later, it happened for the third time so I added the oil and took the car to the mechanic. This can't be an oil leak but there is no oil on the floor below the car in my garage -- I can't imagine that is been collected on the pan below the engine because I already added 3 quarts. My mechanic told me that what is happening is very unusual and is now trying to find the problem. He also said "You may want to ask a question on the SLK forum to see if somebody has any idea what it could be, that can save us time". So here I am.. Thank you in advance and enjoy the ride!

Drop the engine cover down to make sure you have not a drip or leak somewhere to eliminate that side of things first .

Then its either burning it etc or as mentioned poss going in to the water system etc .

Or your elec oil sensor is faulty and you have put in too much oil in the old girl .

Best action is drain out old oil and measure how much has come out .
If its over the specified limit as in 7 - 9 litres ?? ( owners book should tell you exact amount )

Then you have overfilled her .

So sensor fault .

If not then replace with the correct oil and good brand and viscosity and see if she looses still .

Burning a qt of oil in one week would be VERY noticeable from the exhaust even with the catalytic converters. So I believe it is either a sensor fault or a leak.

You can use the 'hidden' service menu to display the ACTUAL oil level instead of the one accessed by going up a few pages from the mileage display in the instrument cluster

Ignition on, press the R button on the side of the instrument cluster 3 times quickly to get to it.

The oil level (when the engine is running) can be viewed on one of the menu pages. (don't remember how many pages down it is !!)

Turning the car back off exits the menu

For proper evaluation: The car should go to a competent shop that only do MB vehicles and they should be familiar with the M113 engine of the SLK55 R171.

The plastic floor covers of the engine compartment need to be removed with the vehicle up on a lift. Careful inspection with good light source by a good mechanic may be able to pinpoint where there is oil leakage. The rear seal between the crankcase and transmission is a common area of leak and can leak a few hundred mL in several weeks but not 900 ml in 1 week.

Presuming the oil level sensor is not faulty, then a search for the source of oil leak is in order.

Isn't the number of miles driven by the OP more pertinent than the passage of a week?

FWIW, I just monitored my oil consumption and it's about 1 litre/1600 miles, which includes frequent excursions to the red line - high revs increase consumption quite significantly. I believe AMG/Mercedes consider anything better than 1000 miles/litre to be acceptable.

I agree a spirited/enthusiastic driving style will consume oil on the M113 engine.

I've noticed perhaps 300 ml of consumption after about 500 miles of spirited driving. Normal daily driving including freeway driving does not consume any engine oil. This is as measured with cold engine on level ground using the service menu as outlined by Seanhump using the R button.

What oil are you using?
How many miles on the car?

If you go to a dealer, they should be able to use a proper dipstick to measure the actual level, compared to what the sensor is reporting if you think it's faulty - or you can buy one yourself.

I am having the same problem. The dealer did notice gaskets that needed replacing that they felt were causing the leaks. They got fixed and my car having the message add 1 litre of oil next refuelling. All gaskets were checked again, no leaks. They topped up my car at mercedes with oil, 1 week later I had the same message add oil. I brought in again, after a look over was told no leaks, its appears my car is burning oil.
It is sitting for the winter now, not sure how i will proceed in spring.
I have a 2006 slk55 with 150,000km.
Did they ever figure out what was wrong with yours?

1 litre about every 1300 miles. Consumption increases with frequent trips to the red line. No smoke on cold start or kick-down. Well within AMG consumption guidelines. Shell Helix Ultra 5w-40. It's great - extends oil change intervals! ;)

Kathy - every time I add 1 litre, I zero the odometer (press and hold third button on LHS of instrument cluster). That way you quickly get an accurate record of consumption.

As I mentioned in your intro, I had the same seals go during the test drive.


A week later I got the add oil, which I did (but just under a litre to avoid overfill).
Then, about a month later I think, got it again.
After that it settled down.


That was nearly a year ago.
This week I just got the add oil sign again, roughly 10 months later.


Maybe it is just settling down.


Mine is an all year car and does mileage.
Not all of it sedately :D

I have my 2007 SLK 55 and it was consuming about 1 liter of oil each ~1000 kilometers. No leaks whatsoever. m113 engines are notorious for consuming oil after 5-6 years of usage and you can (most likely) fix it by changing the valve seals (https://www.google.ru/search?q=m113+valve+seals&oq=m113+valve+seals&aqs=chrome..69i57.3106j0j1&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8) and it is not that expensive. So if there is no major leaks and there is no smoke, I would suggest to do the procedure. To diagnose the issue by yourself you can ask a friend to cold start your car while watching the exhaust. If there is a slight trace of purpleish smoke when you cold start the engine, so here it is, you are to change the valve seals.
