I've learned there's a good reason why Mercedes is so specific about recommended parts. A friend installed E3 plugs in his Kia and suggested I should do the same in my 1998 SLK230.
After two days with the car running badly, my mechanic switched back to the old plugs but by then BOTH coil packs were damaged and had to be replaced.
Since I live on a little island with punishing duty rates, the coils cost around $215 each.
Mechanic measured resistance on the plugs and the E3s carry a higher resistance than the Bosch plugs that were in it.
I did uncover someone on the web with similar problems as well.
I believe the relevant phrase is caveat emptor.
