Okay so, i live in Yorkville, IL and my friend (Jake) and I were going to the fox valley mall, in order to do this you have to drive through some traffic in Oswego at 5:00 o'clock. Well i drive over to his house in my slk and park it in his parents garage so nothing happens to it. Plus i don't really want to leave my car outside by the mall. So we get in his Red Ford F-150. Before we left i told him to turn on the air compressor for his train horn that i wired in about 3 months ago for him, just in case we need to use it (; Anyway on the drive there we are stopped at a stop light at the intersection of 34 & Douglas. (yes where portillios...YUM) While stopped there, this guy pulls out passing a guy stopped at the stop sign to turn right, cuts in front of the guy in the first lane than cuts in front of us in the second lane to turn onto Douglas at the third lane. There had to be at least 6inches of room between my friends truck and this guys car. So i turn to Jake while this guy was half way through and said, "I'm flipping the flippin' switch!" So i reached over and flipped the switch for the train horn (SUPER LOUD) This guy who cut through had to hit his head on the roof of his interior! So he pulls sideways in the turning lane stops and turned back at us with his middle finger pointed high in the air through his back window of his impala. So what did i do? I Smiled and waved at him!!! This got him super mad, he got out of his car and started yelling at us, my friend rolled up his window and locked the door, so did i and i just looked straight forward while my friend was watching him. My friend said he was yelling at us to pull over...What in idiot. So who is at fault here? Did i do the right choice and give that guy what he deserved? He couldn't do anything if he tried, we had at least 10 witnesses from the other folks in their cars. I made a little diagram of this scene on paint (totally accurate...hahaha) I also have a google maps of the intersection. Wouldn't it make more sense for that guy just to get on Douglas at the gas station, instead of doing what he did? Is this legal??? Thanks-Brad

Well Bradley... In my experience with local law... It matters not what is legal, it only matters if you are caught.
Similar to the tree in the woods scenario... did it make a noise? Who cares...lol

Now about the horn blowing...
The sooner you understand "idiots" the easier life will be.
I think you just experienced lesson one.. They don't like being publicly outed.

Hey Bradley, like you, I can't stand those type of people. They are in such a hurry and that's how accidents happen. You know what they say, haste makes waste and there is no excuse for weaving in and out of traffic during commute/rush hour. It must have been fun to see his expression and when I was your age I did similar things. But having said that and even though it made you feel good, it may have been the wrong thing to do. Let me tell you why.

You said in your post that you were stopped at a light while Mr. Jerk was doing the weaving thing. So presumably, there was no immediate risk of an accident as traffic was at a standstill.

Horn laws in most states have not been changed since the 70's, and even when they were amended the laws were geared to reduce noise levels in urban areas. However, most state's laws (though rarely enforced) make it clear and read similar to this: "The driver of a motor vehicle shall when reasonably necessary to insure safe operation give audible warning with his horn but shall not otherwise use such horn when upon a highway."

I for one have been startled before at an overly loud horn that was used to "scold" another driver for his stupidity. Such a loud horn could have made another driver in the opposite direction over-react resulting in slamming on the brakes just to see where the warning was coming from and in itself, could have caused an accident.

In addition to that, there's the whole "Road Rage" thing where people out here have been known to get out of their vehicles to fight, even pull out a gun in response to an action from another driver.

Now, I'm not saying to be a "wus", only to use good judgement and "pick the fights your sure you can win". :burnout:

Do I make any sense?

A classic case of road rage.

The guy saw an opening in traffic and took it, I may have done the same thing but I would have pointed and waved to the cars that I was cutting in front of to get their approval first.

IMO you and Jake were just looking for someone to blow the horn at by making sure it was turned on before you left. Blasting an air horn at close range is enough to scare the crap out of someone. I could see why he whipped you the finger, I may have done the same.

The guy was definitely wrong by getting out of his car and approaching you. I'm glad you and Jake had the sense to stay in the truck with windows and doors locked. Things could have escalated out of control if you would have said something or gestured back at him. On the other hand, locked securely in the truck, I think I would have had another laugh and blasted him again as he approached the truck.

Although he was wrong in the outset, you and Jake were the instigators, it wasn't necessary, but yea, it was funny. Good thing he didn't have a weapon with him.

Btw are air horns even legal?

Oh, Bradley! You don't know how many of these stupid a**holes I and my wife encounter (mostly on a highway) almost every single day here in Houston!!! We do honk at them with my "small" train horn, but guess what - sometimes these crazy people just keep driving in a lane, just straight-through!!! They just go wherever they need to without respecting others! AND it seems there was a new law passed here (don't know when it happened and how) Drivers simply don't use their turn signal lights!!!! I've been cut almost every day in a heavy traffic!
Just this Tuesday I've been driving about 70 miles in my lane and some crazy truck driver cuts three lanes with decreased speed and almost hits me in a side! I had to drive off to a shoulder (Luckily for me it was free from any stalled car) to avoid collision. I pressed my horn sooo bad (btw, now I know it lasts good 8-11 seconds ). All I heard was a silent "beep" from behind and guess what? This maniac cuts three lanes again but to its left (so he was back from where he took off). I can tell you lots of that kind of stories!

And I would agree with Hummingbird:
The sooner you understand "idiots" the easier life will be.
Me, and my friends always say: "We don't feel offended by the fools" =)

Just be careful out there!:tu:

Yeah we are just lucky nothing else happened, but it sure is illegal to pass the first guy at the stop sign truing right, he even went on top of the median to get passed him! If he would've just got on Douglas from the first place (going the other way) it would've been a lot easier and quicker!

:confused:Best NEVER to put yourself in that position. You never know what others will do (bodily harm or damage to your vehicle).

If you lived in Florida you would find that this is common law. What you just saw. Here you can make left turn out of right lane. Red light means two more cars can follow and right hand turn on red only if going 10 mph. Just to list a few.:tazz:

P.S. and everyone carries a gun so watch that horn blowing and giving them the want to have sex sign.

Bradley......just move south to southern Illinois! We don't have traffic, so the traffic rage idiots can roam free and unmolested by train horns.

I know what it takes to run/drive a semi, i stay far away from them and never pull out in front of them, i give them lots of respect on the rode, i don't know how you deal with the other idiot drivers! Apparently they think a huge semi can stop as good as a car with carbon ceramic brakes on!
