Driver Window not working properly

After winter drained my battery, my driver window won't work correctly. When I open the door first thing (in the morning or after the car sits for a while), the window lowers slightly (normal) and closes after the door closes. The window then does not work after that until the care sits for another while after being turned off. I did discover that if I open the door, turn the key (but not turn car on) with door still open, the window will open fully and then close. I get one operation and then the switch does nothing.

Since the switch does nothing when the door is fully closed, I can't perform a Window Reset because the switch does not open the window any longer.

One morning, I entered from passenger side, turned key (engine not running), and the driver window went down fully and back up fully and then nothing. So, I get one window operation and then that's it.

Searching the site, I don't see any situations like mine. I found lots of threads about doing a Window Reset, but I can't do that - the switch is not allowing operation of the window. The motor works, so I don't think that needs to be replaced. Wondering about DCM, but if I order, not sure whether I need to "code" it. I have no software.

Going to try to disconnect battery for a bit and then reconnect to see whether that magically helps. I am not hopeful.

Car = 2005 SLK 350
Passenger window works fine from driver and passenger side switches.

Whilst considering battery and then windows reset I’d fully charge (and ideally measure) the battery.

Windows will not work without sufficient power.

Older batteries charge but do not hold the charge.

Hi all,

I'm having what seems like exactly the same problem, except it hasn't fixed itself (and it's happening on the passenger side). I've messed around with it quite a bit:

  • I've done the window reset procedure (without opening the passenger door, because if I do that, the window won't move), that is, open the window all the way with the button half pressed, wait a few seconds then close it all the way and hold it for a few seconds. The window moved as expected, however afterwards it wouldn't move.
  • If I disconnect and reconnect the battery, I can open the window once, immediately.
  • If I don't close the window fully, I can move it up and down as much as I want
  • If the passenger door is open, it also gets stuck at the bottom, until reset.

I took the door card off to see if I could see anything obviously wrong. I've disconnected and reconnected all the connectors multiple times, and discovered that if I unplug, wait 10 seconds and replug the bottom right one (bottom, front), that's equivalent to disconnecting and reconnecting the battery and it works again for one go.

Having put it all back together again, the car now seems to have decided that "up" is slightly below fully up, which means there's a gap at the top of the window when the door is closed. I think if I have the window module in the reset state, if I open the door, it will drop a bit, and then go back up to the slight gap when I close the door.

After resetting the window module (by unplugging and replugging) I can do any one of the following, but only one, and only once:
  • Have the window open and close as expected when the door is opened.
  • Open the window, move it around as much as I want until I close it
  • Put the roof down (because the window has to drop slightly and then go back up)
  • Put the roof up

{edit} I've thought of another detail that could be worth mentioning. When I press the window switches, I can hear the relays clicking inside the door - there's a click when I press the button and then another click a couple of seconds later. So, the signal is definitely getting to the control module and maybe it's trying to power the motor, but that seems unlikely since the window doesn't move until reset. {/edit}

My suspicion is that the window control module has failed or whatever detects the window position isn't working properly, but I would appreciate any insight anyone can give me! I don't have an MB scanner, but I do have an OBD2 reader. I also have a voltmeter, so I could check for signals on various wires. I'm planning to sell the car soon, and so would like to get everything working before I do so, and I think this is the last thing on the list.

Thanks for your help! Please let me know if there's anything I should try, or if you need any more information. The car is a UK spec 2005 R171 SLK280.
