OK I’ve been reading not much in the posting department but just about finished with modification taking the stereo from a single din to a double din before after picture once I’m finished I’ll carbon fiber wrap it I’m thinking about 3-D scanning it and if anyone else is interested I can then 3-D print it but will need several to cover the cost of 3D scan and reproduction just a thought. I did the same thing for the inner door panel clip mounts that I could not find and no longer available through Mercedes worked great as I am doing a complete change on the interior
Here are a few pics

Interesting! What are you going to fit into your double-Din opening? There are some very good Chinese units that seem to have everything! DAB, sat-nav,reversing camera, TV, AND they're touch-screen! The cost in the U.K. is only £230! Here's an example : https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Android-8-1-Mercedes-C-CLK-G-Class-W203-W209-Vito-Viano-GPS-Car-Stereo-DAB-BT-4G/233165089233?hash=item3649b8e9d1:g:TiAAAOSwzCRciDCV I see that you're changing the interior colour to blue? I've got that cream colour on my SLK and I prefer it because you have a contrast with the blue (nautilus) body colour. Onmy similar aged SLK, I've just changed the front bumper to the Mk2 type (2001Yr onwards} WOW!, does it make a huge difference! SO much more modern, with the fogs flush and a much stronger lower-lip. (I had twice cracked mine when reversing over a (slightly) raised area). The cost wasn't that much and well worth it! If I can have any 3-D printed template that's going to make this mod easier and neater, then I'll get the cost quickly over to you.
Looking at what's required, It's going to be a new front-plate incorporating the air vents, heating/ventilation controls and Double-DIN unit. Then a seperate, angled front-plate for the, now lowered, row of switches. Ideally, they would need to be in the same (carbon) finish as the originals to integrate with the existing dash. O.K., you're going to lose the small, open storage box and pop-out coin/storage device, but that's a small losss for what's gained! I think that it would look just fabulous with a modern, touch-screen display, there! The sat-nav feature would be SO useful!

The carbon look finish of that era is a dip process.
I have seen youtube videos where people have successfully applied this themselves,
but I don’t know how you get the matching pattern for the film, but I think they had
the film made to match a sample.

I think that the way forward is to purchase something like this :- https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MERCEDES-SLK-230-R170-KOMPRESSOR-CENTRE-DASHBOARD-CONSOLE-TRIM-A1706800936/272439588065?hash=item3f6eaa34e1:g:4BYAAOSw5cNYHmY- and to carefully cut and bond the (now) two sections to make a composite with a suitable opening for a double-DIN unit. There will be other pieces, spare, that will improve the appearance of where the new vertical section meets the horizontal piece surrounding the gear-change. I feel that it would be prudent to complete this work before ordering the Double DIN unit. I have also observed that the auto gear-changer would somewhat obsrtuct the access to the (touch) screen .... but not enough to make it not worthwhile, I.M.H.O. I need to determine if that row of switches will easily relocate to a lower position ... Also, I believe that these Chinese DD units ARE supplied with a mounting-cage, so maybe it would be worth purchasing it before the modification to the centre-console?

I've looked at the 3m vinyl wrap and it does look to be a useful and effective material to finish off the modified centre dashboard console trim, pt. no. A1706800936 However, if a spare part is purchased, I've realised that the join between the two sections is only going to be a few mm's and will be almost imperceptible. So everything would then remain in the original finish and there would be no need for any wrapping/covering. Further, there will be a "bar" of material, spare, that will make a good union between horizontal and vertical sections. I think that I'm going to proceed with this mod. Most of the Double-DIN units seem to benefit from being linked to an I-phone. Well, I do have one, but I don't use it much. So all that I would require is good DAB reception, Sat-nav (but not via an I-phone) and DVBT. I know that there's so many more features on offer with these units, but that's enough!

Almost finished all is prepped for 3D scanning ind carbon fiber wrap Sims I’m changing the colors of the interior carbon fiber wrap comes in very useful elation interior in my opinion absolutely ugly but to each their own the MOD has come out very well after the carbon fiber wrap should look factory

Here a few more pictures I’ll put the finishing pictures up once it’s wrapped and flat screen and switches are installed I’m also adding switches for the heated seats which I installed

Ah! I see that you've chosen to modify the horizontal plate (around the gear-shift). I had it in mind to angle the vertical section that formed the row of switches and use the surplus "bar" as a union between vertical/horizontal pieces. That way, you're following the curve of the main centre section ... However, I'm now thinking that what you've done looks more "original" and continuous. So it might be back to using the 3m wrap .... I'm impressed with your ideas and what you're achieving! So much in common! How about you thinking of converting your SLK to run on LPG? (Is there any of that in the U.S.?) Is there a big price difference between the two fuels?

Next step is to rep a 3D scam so it can be reproduced dry fit went well. Then wrap it. I started reassembly of the interior was cream and black. Now black, carbon fiber black, with carbon fiber blue highlights. Will post final pics and let u know how 3D scam goes

I'm so impressed with your work .... well done! Now if you do decide to have a 3-D scan of both modified sections (vertical and horizontal) and can produce a copy of them for myself, then I'd be happy to send you whatever it cost, plus shipping to the U.K. Please let me know if you decide to do this ..... Now as to your use of the carbon fibre wrap to other areas of the interior, I can see how professional it can look! However, I've always preferred a light and airy interior and would therefore keep as much of the "quartz" colour as possible. Incidentally, to achieve this aim on my Audi A2, I change the complete dash and door-panels from black to platinum and I've changed the colour of the leather seats three times! I'll wait to see what you're going to do with that 3-D scan ... it would save me a lot of work and the "down-time" for having the SLK off the road would be much reduced ....

Went to my 3D guy for scan and printing it is a little more involved since I retained all the Back clips. We will need to scan and create a cad drawing and most the clips will needs to be hand entered in the car so it can be lined up perfect as well as a extra center console for them to do mockups with. But then I can reproduce them and it all will be lick factory I will also be able to modify for 3,4 or 5 switches. You and others would get a trim cover that would mount right up just paint or wrap. I will need to do a group buy to cover costs. Maybe 12 unit at $200-$250 should be a break even including producing the 12 units. What do you think on the price it cost me more than that to get it right

As for my colors I am doing a complete black out on the car. And with wraps if I Chang my mind latter I can pull it off and go to anouther color besides dome repainting a few interior parts. Wraps have unlimited colors

That cost would be fine by me! I'm happy with that ..... I'd need the full row of switches for my SLK (seven)! Heated seats, too, AND LPG switch! It would have been an easy task to simple create any new switch positions, anyway. I think that this is such an improvement to the SLK that you should find quite a few more members who would want your mod! You haven't mentioned the altered (extended) horizontal piece that goes round the gear-changer? I'd need that, too ...
Keep up the good work!

Both Pieces go together so that’s the cost for both and 7 switches is how mine is I had to add two. One on either end for my heated seats I added switches are not factory but I think blend in good. Is going back together and looking good for my taste it was pretty ragged interior when I got it in January. I will keep you advised. Going put up a new post to see if I can get group support for a group buy of at least a dozen

Ok posted in R170 general mods to judge interest we will see how it goes

See how many slk snobs are negative seems some just like to throw Sh#t

Would love to reproduce it for others it was a lot of work and many mistakes just not worth the trouble for some people and this would be the easy button for them.

Wife says I will break something just to see if I can figure it out. She is a bit correct

It looks superb! Soooo modern! Well done!
There is just one area where we would differ .... there is just no way that I would have used those non-standard switches/controllers for the heated seats! I would have found some from a breakers, or even purchased from Mercedes, even at their prices! But that's just the way I work ...
