Woman gets ticket for driving 2 mph under speed limit

A Maryland woman has gotten a very unusual speeding ticket for driving a mere two miles under the speed limit on Interstate 95.
Local NBC affiliate News4 reports that the woman, who asked to keep her name anonymous, was driving 63 miles per hour in a 65-mph zone. Police say the reason they ticketed her was that she was driving in the left lane reserved for speedier commuters.
"[I was] really shocked," she told the station. "I thought, 'Oh my God, you've got to be kidding me.'"
Of course, commuters who get annoyed by someone hogging the right lane might salute the move.
However, the woman noted the area was experiencing heavy winds at the time and she was only driving under the speed limit as a safety precaution. She also claimed to have never been ticketed before.
"Sometimes when it's dangerous, you have to do what you can to stay safe," she said.
She has one ally on her side: the local branch of AAA.
"The reason [the ticket] is silly is because it's sending the wrong message," said John Townsend of AAA Mid-Atlantic. "And that is, 'We will tolerate you driving at more than the speed limit, but it you drive below the speed limit, then you're penalized for that.'"

Bravo !

I must say - it is incredibly frustrating to me that people seem to want to drive in the left hand lane on the Interstate at the speed limit. It's like their father told them to do it. Fortunately it's easy to pass people in the SLK, on the right or the left.

(Did I just say that?)

I totally agree with Gene! Hate when people get in the leftmost lane and drive 60mph and everybody has to pass them on the right side and they don't even pay attention to flashing lights or beeps coming from the cars passing by... But I always can pass on the right =) R):flag: Just need to keep a harder foot on a throttle pedal and downshift from D (5th) to 4th on my little sweetheart to let her know beforehand that I'm in a hurry =)

What is so hard about moving to the right after making a pass in the left lane? Specifically has nothing to do with how fast she was going it has to do with she did not yield the passing lane to others who wished to pass.
It truly comes done to courtesy. How would she like it if someone was in front of her limiting her ability to pass.
She should be sentenced to 20 hours on the autobahn and let the Germans meter out justice

Slow drivers in the left lane cause accidents...been proven...no argument on this point. NC and SC announced this on air that slow drivers in left a lane will get a ticket. I am glad. And the wind story = another excuse for poor judgement. No difference in driving ability at 63 and 65 mph with increased wind speeds handling your car.

We have the same problem with those people in the UK in the middle lane even though there's nothing in the inside lane, and we're not allowed to overtake on the inside !

Many is the time I've had to move from the inside lane, thru' the middle lane to the outside- just to overtake some pleb travelling at 68mph in the middle lane - then I've moved back over to the inside lane, but they never get the message !!

Just inconsideration for other drivers on the road......:tazz:

They need to give more of these tickets. Around here you see a lot of the signs that says, "Use left to pass only" and everyone ignores them and use the left lane even though the right lane is emptied.

Concur.. If it was so windy she had to decrease her speed, why didn't she leave the highway and take secondary roads, which are generally more sheltered.

Also agree with the comment by Reb - some seem to be acting as constabulary, metering speed by pacing those behind them.

If you're done passing, move back to the right...all the way if you please.

Here, there was a radio talk show program that discussed the speed limits being too low especially on 4 - 6 lane, illuminated, straight highways. One caller mentioned that he stayed in the left lane at the speed limit no matter who was behind him since he was within his legal right. I checked. He isn't.

"The driver of a vehicle proceeding at less than normal speed of traffic at the time and place and under the conditions then existing must drive the vehicle in the right hand lane then available for traffic, or as closely as practicable to the right hand curb or edge of the roadway, except when overtaking and passing a vehicle proceeding in the same direction, or when preparing for a left hand turn at an intersection or into a private road or driveway.. "

I checked a few other Canadian Motor Vehicle Acts (including Ontario Highway Act , Der) and they read similar. Notice it says nothing about speed limit but does mention "speed of traffic".

Gordon

PS Had another 10 minutes so checked Maryland and they have a similar law. Also OP is Florida "Always drive on the right side of a two-lane highway except when passing. If the road has four or more lanes with two-way traffic, drive in the right lanes except when overtaking and passing."

slower vehicles always keep right.

otherwise, put race fuel in your fuel tank and hammer the accelerator :) Left lane only please - no R-hand lane driving.

I wish all our drivers would stay in the left lane It would be great :)
OMveryG don't get me started on this one!

DO you remember the old road safety advert for motorway driving with 3 different drivers day dreaming about stuff whilst sitting in the middle lane - one was dreaming of Can-Can girls (strangely don't remember the others)? It was all about keeping left. & overtaking only etc.

WELL BRING THE AD BACK AGAIN

Nothing more infuriating than some moron sitting in the middle (or right) line, making no attempt to progress past anything to the left. They seem to be oblivious to anything around them.

The UK needs a proper motorway test!

I blame the driving instructors. They must teach these people to drive like they do. Added to the general attitude of "I'm alright Jack" that seems to prevail these days. People do things in cars they wouldnt dream of doing on foot. Its the steel shell that insulates them and is the main contributor to road rage

I read somewhere yesterday on the news that carbohydrate intake (specifically refined or processed carbs) contributed to road rage... don't get me started on the evils of modern processed food

Some of the problem around here has to do with how they post it. The one sign that makes sense says "Keep right except to pass". However another more often encountered sign says "Slower traffic keep right". Obviously, the failure to denote "slower than what"?, allows each driver to define it as he wishes, and they do.

However, I believe the basis of the problem is that there are more and more drivers, who are totally oblivious of how their driving affects the others around them. It is a part of any increasing number of our population who feel the universe revolves around them, and everyone had best get out of their way. When you add to that, those people who go through their whole lives totally unaware of almost everything, the problem grows exponentially.

That concludes the philosophy lesson. You may take the rest of the day off. :D
