I've had my 2006 SLK55 for a couple of months now and had maybe a half dozen "incidents". Two teen boys on bicycles screaming out "nice car'. More teen kids on my street screaming basically the same thing. People coming up to me at the gas pump. Two 20 something guys taking a picture or movie of the car with a phone camera driving down I95. I don't think most people even know what the car is beyond the Mercedes badge. My sense is that they are reacting to the looks and the sound and the three pointed star. Maybe the AMG badge as well.

So what's the general experience out there? Do many people know what these cars are? Do you get people oogling your ride? Do people want to chat you up about the car?

If you have the smarttop, there will be more expressions of amazement as top goes up or down at 30 mph
Most have no idea
They like the styling and the aggressiveness of it
They take pics and videos with their phones at lights where i pop the top to give em a show

I've only got a little 280 and have had the same experience. I was at a light, top down, jammin' to the tunes, waiting at a red light, when a 20-something passenger jumped out of the truck behind came up and asked what type of Mercedes it was. Both the driver and passenger gave me big thumbs up and hollering "cool ride Man". Kind of stoked the old ego. The Escalade sitting next to me with the big 22's was a bit miffed and attempted to beat me off the light. No chance and I was just smilin' that much more.

I've gotten a different type of attention here in OC. Usually obnoxious comments or attempts to drag race from guys in domestic trucks with lift kits.

However, when I was on the East coast, had similar experiences with strangers coming up to compliment or admire the SLK.

I am now under instruction to get out and use the car more.
But apparently I'm being a boy racer when I use the acceleration (hmm, love that Kompressor and the after-market exhaust) or have the music so I can hear it (hmm, love those rear speakers) or put the top up as we drive into the car-park (hmm, love that Cabrio-Module). Can't win!

Now the SLK is pretty much up together, we get out in it more, but don't seem to attract attention.
And the one-touch roof will make this so much better for poseur value, especially when parking! (Just got to get the central unlocking working)
But it is rare around here that I sit in traffic, so not much chance to interact with adjacent drivers.

I pass an R171 and an R172 on my (non-SLK) commute each morning. Nice eye-candy!

Although mine is not an AMG, I get compliments nearly every time I drive the car. I have had many nice cars including Mustang (65 Pony Edition and 67 Mustang), Camero, Datsun 280Z, Triumph Spitfire, Triumph TR6, Porsche (1972 911T and 2006 911SC Cabriolet 997), BMW i325, Corvette (3 in all, C5 & C6). Never before has a car I have driven been noticed more than the SLK. People of all ages and gender continously ask about her. It is quite fun!

I’m actually surprised by all the attention our new AMG is getting. I’ve spent an inappropriate amount of money on cars in my life, so not new to nice rides that get attention, but I never expected so much with this little car!
Our other vehicles are a C6/Z06 Corvette, a Jeep SRT-8, and a Cadillac Escalade… the new little AMG has received more attention than all those added together!

Don't have an AMG but when I first got the car, it attracted a lot of attention. A lot of people mistaken it as the SLR. I had people asked me, "Why am I driving such an expensive car for my age?" I had girls asking me if the passenger seat is taken, same goes for boys. Compliments are rare these days and I am seeing more and more r171's around. My Porsche gets most of the attention, usually from the EVO/STI/Honda crowd. Had teenagers cutting me off to take picutres.

Oh that sounds like heaven.........
Yup, a traffic jam here may have as many as five vehicles.
Mind you, the little old lady at the front couldn't possibly get out into a gap that she can see the oncoming traffic, so five vehicles can take a long time to clear! ;)

Had a few admirers today and not from the general public ,but from Merc mechanics !!

Took a run to the dealer as the add oil light came on so figured i get them to slap some in and reset the engine light and do a test all at the same time so to speak. So in i go ,see my English speaking Bossman explain what i want and he says no problemio bring it straight into the workshop , so in i drive and within a few seconds 3 mechanics are buzzing around it ,looking at the wheels and the new grills , nodding bienno bienno which means good .. as they checked out the wheels and the new grills .

So i take that as a compliment as these know cars etc R)

And !!! They call the 55 AMG here "The Jet" as its more Jet engine than car engine apparently ..

In contrast, here on the Connecticut "Gold Coast" in the NY Metro area my 33 mile one way commute to work can take 45 min on a very good day or 2.5 hrs on a bad day. And it's totally random. No way to plan for it. I've left the house at 8:00 AM and arrived at work at a quarter to 9. And I've left the house at 7:00 AM and arrived at 9:30.

There are only two major "pipes" running North/South, I95 and the Merritt Parkway. Once you've committed to one, there is no easy way to switch over to the other. Ya makes yer choice and ya takes yer chances. So when one of them goes to hell, all you can do is sit and stare at truck (lorry) bumpers.

This is precisely why I wanted a sports car like the SLK55 with an automatic. So to all the manual transmission purists out there SSSPPPPPLLLLLTTTT!:p

Always good to have the guys who are working on your car enthralled with it! If anyone were to be in love with my car, I'd want it to be those guys.

For a commute (a real one, with the traffic and everything) I would want an auto. For the little impedances to my drive to work, there is little or no point, so my fun car should be a manual.

And I had a scare the other day; being used to manuals that do not drift, I was stationary and resetting the radio, when I realised I was not stationary, and had coasted past the place where I had last seen the bumper of the car in front. Fortunately, they had moved around the corner, so I had an extra six feet to stop, back up, and feel embarrassed (but not bent).
Calls for handbrake, methinks.

I've had quite a few people comment: Nice ride. Or people ask what kind of car is it. Once in the drive-up window line at McDonalds some guy behind me in a pickup truck started talking to me (from inside his truck) and telling me, nice car and asking questions. Asked about my illuminated Windrestrictor . I'm talking to this person and couldn't even see who I was talking to. It was kind of weird. It was at night and dark. Another time some guy told me I look good in the car ?? I just take in all the compliments and smile. Tell them I love the car. Not even an AMG

I'm not so sure about that. I live in a fairly "poshie" area with more than it's fair share of expensive and exotic cars. I still get compliments where ever I go.

I believe any luxury car {that's out of the ordinary} commands attention [and so does their owner]. The slk's in particular seem to draw out a fondness from onlookers. Just like a Picasso, a fine wine, or a sparkly piece of jewelry from any collector.

We can be as humble as we want to be. But when we drive, people take note. And it's fanfreakingtastic ;)
