A genuine question,is it only owners of AMG models who get upset with badge upgraders or do non-AMG owners feel as upset about it?
I bought my car for its looks and the security of the folding hard top which is why i am happy with the cheap (to buy and and own in the UK) diesel version. I am happy for every one who has one, and belevie that they can treat it as they wish. After all it is their choice, their car and their money
and we all have different ideas in life.
I will now wait to be put in my place as a newbie

I would think most don't care. True they spent extra $ to get AMG suspension, power, etc. But when we/I see someone attempting to have or be something they are not, a blantant lie in my opinion. If one wants to debadge, fine. most won't know.

if more poll statements need to be added, let me know. Keep it clean :D

Are they not real?

My Timex I am sure is made by Rolex it looks very similar, two hands and one that does the seconds.
My dad had a Fordborgini MkIII and I am sure that is was an Italian sports car?
We also have some Tesco bags that are Gucci I think.
But I am not too sure about my MX5 it seems to have an AMG badge on the back?
:grin::wink::grin:

The front brakes are usually a dead giveaway. But if someone wants to add or remove badges to massage their ego, why should I care? Some non-AMG SLKs with AMG body kits have AMG on the boot lid from the factory. Don't make the car an AMG, but no need to debadge it either IMHO. My new C220 Coupe is an 'AMG Sport' model, but it's not a C63. It doesn't have AMG on the boot lid, but I have seen some similar cars with the AMG logo. So, each to their own I guess.

As I have no doubt most will agree, this is all down to personal preference.

I HAVE debadged my 250CDI. Not because I want people to think it's anything else (there is no way you can hide the fact that it's a diesel, and I wouldn't want to do that anyway), but simply because to me the back end looks so much better without the badges. This is not about ego. It's about how I want my car to look.

Everyone has their own opinion and views......

Are they? What happens when you see big brakes and debadged and NO AMG logo..:surprise:
Well if someone has gone to the lengths of fitting big brakes, and presumably quad tailpipes, lowered suspension and other AMG tell-tales, but then no AMG badges. It would be difficult to tell what's under the hood. It would certainly be hard to tell it from a debadged AMG.

If the car only had the 1.8 engine, six-pot big brakes would be a bit redundant. Not enough preformance and weight to get the brakes up to temperature. But hey, if someone wants to do that, good luck to them.

So, I'm not saying I can't be fooled. Simply that where folks just apply an AMG badge on a standard non-AMG car, the front brakes are something of a giveaway.

Edit - one of the guys here (Adamantium) effectively made a replica 55 out of a 350. It had a manual gearbox IIRC which would have been a giveaway. I also believe that he never badged it as an AMG. So posing or not? Discuss.

I've debadged mine, because I like to give an air of mystery to the guy that i've ripped at a traffic.

Also, without the badges it's easier to wax & polish the boot.

I once met a guy in Birmingham (MSL) who had a C63 Coupe which was supercharged -Weistec to 650hp (Which I personally saw on the Dyno) and he badged his car to C180 LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL. His reasoning was "Love wiping smug smirks of they face"

I personally do not mind if anyone over badges a car, it might be ridiculous, but if it gives pleasure then fine by me. I smile and let it pass.

Adding parts or customising is a personal thing, and not necessarily making the car look something it is not - especially if badges are not applied. Or this is my way of thinking. I add things because I can. And I like messing with brakes, suspension and engines! I should get out more I know! But you are right - good discussing point.

In another thread, I aired my feelings that the AMG thing has been too diluted, even by Mercedes in their drive to get more sales by adding 'AMG sports packs' to ordinary cars.

Interesting what you say about weight, power and brakes. Engine power does not require heftier brakes - the only thing is the weight of the car and the need to stop that weight. With more power, the kinetic energy rises which might need more braking but only if you want to stop quicker. With the SLK55 at 1.6T, the SLKCDi at 1.5T and the 250 at 1.3T, and with 99.9% of these cars will never be driven on a track - you could say that it is the 55 that is under-engineered in the brake department!

I've always been a fan of debadging cars for a cleaner look but at one time I did add wing/fender badges to my 55 because I thought that the large flat area looked a little odd, almost like something was missing. So for a while I had 5.5 AMG badges on the wings but as they were cheap tat from Ebay they didn't survive the first winter. I have since removed those along with all other badges except the front and rear stars and I must say I like the uncluttered look at the rear. The lack of model designation definitely keeps the less knowledgable people guessing about what's under the bonnet. I always find it highly amusing when people have put badges on a car to suggest it's something it's not but it's their car so that's up to them!

My car was debadged when I bought it but I quickly put back the originals. And to complement I added V6 3.2 badges on the fenders as I think the car look "naked" without anything there. I doubt that the 320 ever had any original fender badges like the 230 Kompressor but I wanted it never the less.

But rebadging a car to simulate a higher spec car is a bit silly I think. And to be honest, quite sad. To me it gives the impression of an owner that is dissatisfied with his car and wish he would have been able to buy something else. Quite sad, you should enjoy and be proud of the car spec you do have. You can't fool yourself......

I tend to agree.I think we all know what a "true" AMG is, but the AMG sports packs confuse the issue. Apart from the body kit, they also include larger (AMG) wheels, lowered suspension, flappy paddles etc, so arguably they're "more" than standards SLKs - and they sometimes seem to come with the AMG badging.
Personally, I couldn't care less what the badge shows. If you want to put a Lambo badge on a Ford Focus, go for it - at least you'll give us a smile!

I don't have the options I need to vote my view, but I thought I'd share my humble opinion here anyway...

Debadging can be quite cool... and a little mystery as to what lies beneath can be great with many things in life, not just cars! :tu:

Badging to try to make it appear to be something better than it is can lead to embarrassment and/or disappointment, although can be humourous for others... again, a principle that can apply to many things in life, not just cars! ;)

Hmmm as an owner of one of the 'confusing the issue' SLK's with the factory fitted AMG sports pack (bodykit, wheels, suspension) I must admit I have added and AMG boot badge and decals to the front brakes (after I painted them silver, as they were a bit rusty and horrible. So painted over the original 'Mercedes Benz' decal). I have also fitted a quad style exhaust..

Does that make me a fraud/liar or can I consider my AMG'ish enough for that to be ok..??
