:confused: Out of financial necessity, I need to mount 17" wheels on the rear of my 07 SLK 280 while still running 16" wheels on the front. I will replace the fronts as soon as the rest of the funds are available. Will performance and handling be adversely affected by this? :confused:

I think you are going to get into a bind with the ESP, as it's going to be seeing different front/back rotational speeds - I had that happen with new 17's on the back and really worn ones on the front, so I suspect the 16/17 is going to be worse...

Should be OK if the outer diameter of wheel+tire on front and back are within 3% of each other. Any larger and it's going to throw off various systems as John mentioned.

I'll vote with Durk. It's the tire OD that matters most. (170) Stock 16" 205 = 24.88 16" 225 = 24.86 (.08% difference (nominal calculated))

So Rim Dia, - Section Width, SW%, Calculated Dia. - % Difference

F-16 205 55 24.88 0.08%
R-16 225 50 24.86

F-17 225 45 24.97 1.02%
R-17 245 40 24.72

Can do this with simple math for any tire size. (Actual tire dia. will vary due to inflation pressure, mounted rim width, etc.. Which is why it would be good to stay well within the ranges. I like less than 1% difference myself.)

So if you use stock sizes, 16" front, 17" rear = .64% difference, you should be good.
