I have that factory net thing that goes over the hoops. It seems to do nothing. 25 MPH? Can't tell a difference. 45 MPH? can't tell a difference. 65? can't tell a difference. 80? I think the net causes more trouble than it can possibly help.

A LOT of people buy those things so I feel like it MUST do SOMETHING... or do you mainly buy them for the look? Any takers?

I bought an OEM clear plastic windscreen. I like it much better than the mesh for two reasons.

1. I can now see out of the rear view mirror, especially at night.
2. With the side windows up there is minimal turbulence in the cabin, even at interstate speeds.

To be honest, I haven't taken it off since I got it, and so I can't really tell you the actual "difference" it makes with the passenger windows down.

I am glad I have it though, and feel like it was worth the $400 or so I paid for it.

On the R171, the OEM clear works great - I had a mesh one that I never even installed on the car.

As Gene said, with the side windows up @ 70, it makes the car much nicer - make really long top-down trips much easier to do - in a large part due to the fact that the better half is happier without her hair in her face! :p

I have the mesh one installed on my car and with the windows up it really makes a difference. Windows down not sure if any of them make that much difference but I haven't tried one of the solid ones. I leave it installed all the time and once you learn to look thru it I really like it. Dims bright lights at night but does limit visibility. Just my 2 cents......

Can only speak from a 171 owners view but the clear one makes a hell of a difference :)

The picture over there <<<<<< was taken before I bought a clear one :

I've just installed an oem item to my partners 171 at the weekend.
To be honest, I don't notice much of a difference between not having one fitted and having one installed.:rolleyes:

The oem item does look far nicer than any of the other options that I've came across though. :biglaugh:

I have a clear one and it does make a deference. My wife did not think so. So I took it off and we road around with the radio on and wind blowing. Put it back on and you could here the radio and talk to each other with out yelling the wind was a bit less. but you still have it coming over the top of the windshield. It does help and looks great. I got it on line for just over $100.00 Have put it on the inside of the head rest and it looks a lot better.

Anyone go with the Wind Restrictor that is advertised on this site by King Penn? I'm curious if the install on the R171 is really as easy as they say it is. The etching with illumination is tempting. But I figure the illumination would only come into play at night, and that is not generally when I'm driving with the top down. Of course, that might change once summer hits. But if I have an illuminated star logo, would I still be able to see with the rear-view mirror? I'm thinking it is more for show and may not be practical while driving. Let me know your experience.

Have both, plastic is better. Found that seat height is a major factor in screen performance. Not a consideration if your a short person unless you crank you seat all the way up, Taller drivers get better protection with the seat lowered as much as comfortable. Wish my plastic screen was 1" higher. I'm 6' 1".

I have the Wind Restrictor and the install is very easy. Took less than 10 min. to install. I did not get any illumination options but did get "AMG" etched on a clear one.

OEM windscreen

Is the OEM windscreen simple to install, ordered one from the dealer today and he wanted me to bring it in for installation. I told him to just ship it to my home since he is 55 miles away. Hope I did the right thing.

oem windscreen installs in about 60 seconds. you pop in the inserts in the roll bars from the back, then the glass goes in the slots from the top, with the buttons inside. that's all!!!

assuming you mean the plexiglas one and not the net

To answer the question about whether the illumination effects visibility at night--
I personally of not own an SLK but I do have a new Camaro and a Sky both of which have illuminated Wind Restrictors. My personal preference is to upgrade with either a dimmer module or break light module. Both of these options allow me to dim my LEDs at night to my heart's content. I LOVE the illumination but as you said, when reversing it is great to dim it down, thus our module options.

There will be very little difference between the OEM mesh and the solid wind baffle. The mesh is dense enough to be as effective as a solid object when hit by the turbulant wind plus the relative porosity to the completely open cockpit.

The main benefit of the OEM clear plastic is that it is clear, plus it has a slight curve to give an extra inch or so height compared to the warp/weft of the mesh that tends to dip down.

I notice the difference with the baffle because my left ear gets colder than my right (against the door) without it!
