I previously looked around for instructions on this and found none. So I did it and here is the how to. This DIY is not for the timid, and probably far more trouble than it is worth .... but this will get you there.

NOTE: This is primarily a work-around for cars without factory installed paddle shifters (and their wires) and should work for any model with a "5G-tronic" (also know as NAG 1) auto.

Background :
SO, there I was,, I had my (2002 slk32) shifter apart for another reason and noticed how simple it would be to tap into the up and down functions (so I added the wires while I had it apart). Shortly after, I was talking with Rob @ needswings about something else and this topic came up. He told me some guys on the crossfire forum had done this, so I went looking there. It seems that a few had been done, but they were switching to paddle shift equipped wheels and then using a small remote transmitter (as there are too few available circuits in the clockspring).

Having an extra steering wheel (and a basic understanding of digital and analog electronics) I decided to do this in my SLK32 with the stock wheel (without the wireless interface) using the AMG aluminum paddles. Instead of using the wireless remote and receiver , I put all of the switch signals (horn, shift down and shift up) on to the horn line and then decoded them under the dash with a module that drives the horn relay and the up and down switches in the floor shifter.

Using the paddle shifters on the wheel shifts Identically as the - and + on the floor shifter.

Sorry, I did not take pics of the floor shifter dis-assy. I would strongly recommend starting there. This part is not rocket science, but it takes patience. ... I may post some pics of that part later as i will be helping a local 2002 s55 owner do this mod to his car shortly and plan on taking pictures of the floor shifter dissasembly, mod and reassembly.

the part number for the aluminum paddle switches I used is 1712670046. This is for a set (right and left) $99 at parts.com
(I opted to install 8-32 helicoils in mine ....)

WARNING:
DON'T turn your car on with the airbag unplugged (this will cause your SRS system to require a dealer reset.

I have been running this set up for more than a month now and the only complaint I have ... is that I didn't do it years ago!!

Wow, that is a mod that is not for the faint of heart. Looks great though, and paddle shifters are definitely a nice feature.

Looks like a nice project. I like your paddles better than the built in ones on the '55. I'm constantly hitting them when not intended.

complete install instructions

Here are the complete instructions for installing paddles shifters in a Crossfire or an R170 SLK.

I wrote it for crossfires as there seemed to be a lot more interest on their forum (more than 20 of them have done this Mod already or are doing it now).

The directions for installing this on an SLK only differ slightly in that the rear center console does not have to be fully removed, the front center console does not have to be modified, and the SLK steering wheel already has the through holes in its horn-base so it needn't have any holes drilled in it. (all in all, quite a bit easier in an R170). The rest of the install is identical (2 of the guys on the crossfire board are installing this Kit in R170's).

While designed for the R170, this mod has been done in more crossfires (arounf only 10 R170s ... while more than 40 crossfires have it now).

here is a link to a thread with more info and end user feedback
http://www.crossfireforum.org/forum/crossfire-srt6/52538-paddle-shifter-install-instructions-completed.html

this thread (starting aroundt post #63 ) also has a lot of info , user feedback and install pictures.

Mods, if posting links to another forum is a no-no, I apologize, feel free to edit if required.

Cheers,
Chris

Thanks Chris,
I am already making enquiries to have this done.
I will keep the thread alive.
Ric.
There are several vendors that you can get this kit from (or directly from me, the manufacturer). I am not sure which if any of these may be SLKworld sponsors. but it is available thru DCTmotorsports (USA) and srt-6.com (sweden). Closer to you, another retailer I work with, comandonlineUK may be able to point you to an installer or do the install themselves. ComandonlineUK stocks other products that I manufacture and could certainly line this up for you (Talk to Richard).

Cheers,
Chris

Do you know anyone in the bay area who can install this paddle shifter? My email is [email protected]. Thank you
Well, I am in the bay area and I have installed this for some customers in the past. More often though, customers (I've sold more than 60 of this particular kit -mostly to Crossfire SRT6 owners) install it themselves or have their favorite INDY install it. The instructions are detailed and complete.

Having said all of that, the kit is currently out of stock and I'm not sure how soon I will make more.

Send me a PM if you want more info or want to be added to the list (to be notified when the nest batch is ready).

Cheers,
Chris

I am absolutely blown away with this install. Sorry for being so late to the party but I got my slk32 recently and it's damn near perfect and I think paddles would be a fine touch not for real world gains just driving pleasure!

I am very interested in a kit and possibly install if your another mender which experience is avialable.

Please email me or pm at anytime if you can still help with this.

Thank you!
