My rearview mirror just developed a bubble type discoloration suddenly.

As this may have happened several days after spraying it lightly with a cleaner. Is it possible to dry it out? If not, I plan to replace it.

I have a 2002 SLK230 and will be looking for a excellent condition used mirror. However, I heard there may be a newer model there might be better to buy. Mine seems to have been made by Donnelly. Any comments about what model or where to purchase it would be appreciated.

Also I would very much like explicit directions as to how to remove it correctly.

How to remove:
If you put your finger on the "foot" of the mirror - close to the windshield - you'll feel a little hole there.
If you push a 5mm- 1/5 inch -rod in that hole, and twist the whole mirror (with "foot") 90 degrees, you can remove the mirror from the gluepad

Thank you Gabus for your info.
Now I'm simply trying to remove the section attached to the sunvisors so that I can reach the mirror.

So far:
I've put top down and removed 4 Phillips type screws that were holding the sunvisors on. The 5 foot top section does not want to slide off the windshield easily. It seems to be stuck near the center portion..

Do I need to remove the microphone cover? Pry it off?
Do I need to remove the overhead lens cover? Pry it off?

I was able to figure this out so no one needs to write back. Microphone cap and lens cap come off easily with a small pry screwdriver.

For those with a 2002 SLK, it is necessary to remove two screws underneath the overhead light lens, in order to pull off the 5 foot section that goes across the windshield.

This enables one to reach the mirror to twist it off like Gabus said. It takes quite a bit of force to remove it.

Thanks for the great feedback on the mirror. I was able to remove mine by following your tips but also used a vise wrench on the mirror since I ws replacing the old one with a new mirror. It came off really easy that way!

I ended up buying a new one for @ $210 from the dealer versus going through a refurb process.

KISS or keep it simple &^%$#*

If some of you are like me you tend to complicate things. Just thought I would add here that putting the rod in the hole to remove the mirror is only to get leverage to twist it off, and there is no magic button inside the mirror the rod is pushing on....just thought I would add that:D

DIY - How To With Pictures - 1999 SLK 230 Mirror Replacement

Thanks to everyone that contributed information and directions related to replacing the inside rear view mirror on our R170 SLK's. Certainly the written directions are clear enough for anyone with a little experience working on their own cars - to follow.

But then - there are lot people that have never attempted to take any part of a car's interior apart - and brief written instructions can leave them feeling - more than a little uncertain about their desire to do anything themselves.

For that reason - as I was in the process of changing-out my defective interior rear view mirror, for a new replacement - I took some more pictures of the process. Just so others can see how really easy it is to do it yourself.

I have put them up on my server at the following URL. When I learn how to get all this put up on the SLKWorld sight/server - I'll archive it there as well.

Thanks for the FYI - but to tell you the truth - I was fully aware of that, as it is clearly marked on the First Post.

While this thread was started 5 years ago - I think the dates of "Most Recent Posts" are more important when you are looking for more current data/information. The latest Posts to this Discussion Thread were only a week ago - and this Thread was proposed as a STICKY. So I felt that the original start date was pretty much irrelevant.

I read this excellent procedure and followed it quite well but found a couple of things slightly different on the 2001 SLK 320 when all was completed.
It is necessary to remove the four screws holding the sun visors but you do not have to remove the windshield header molding on the 2001 model. The interior light is different and offers good access.
If you pull the lens off the map lights it comes away quite easily and there are two screws under the lens that must come out.
Removing all 6 screws allows the trim molding to flex in the middle of the windshield at the bottom.
Pull on the driver's side end of the lamp housing and it will come out easily. Slide it slightly to the left (driver's door) and the connector will clear leaving a large hole.
In the hole the wire for the mirror is easily located simple by pulling the bottom of the trim away from the windshield and wiggling the mirror wire.
There does not appear to be any cable clamp in this model where Carl's picture shows it.
Pull the connector through the hole and carefully disconnect it by sliding a small flat screwdriver down to the hole where the pin is and pull the pin past the hole as Carl describes.
Pull the mirror wire back towards the windshield while holding the molding away from the glass. 1/4-1/2" is easy to achieve and is plenty of clearance.
Remove the mirror as Carl describes it.
Reverse the process to re-install the mirror. You may have to fish the wire from the mirror into the lamp hole but if you have smaller hands you can reach in and grab it. Worked good for me.
As a footnote, Sybesmas does not have a replacement swap out mirror in stock at this time so I must send mine in for rebuild. At $97 including return shipping it is far cheaper than most used ones on the market and is guaranteed to work. The only risk is they could damage the case.

I got the replacement from Sybesmas in about 2 weeks from the day I sent it and it came back great.
When I put the visors and header back after removing the mirror for shipment, I left the wire exposed so all I had to do was put the mirror back in place, connect the wire and tuck it back up behind the header. No screws, visors or lights to remove It took all of 5 minutes to do. Glad to have it back for sure. Driving without it is freaky.

All this info was perfect

I not only had a bad mirror on my 2001 320 but the wind shield had to be replaced....two chips right in front of the drives view. I followed the directions mentioned here...it was a breeze to un install the mirror. Sent it to Frisco Texas and for $99 they fixed it. The installers who replaced the wind shield replaced the mirror button on the glass and when I went to re-install it....just like factory.
Now we have a sparkling windshield and a auto dimming mirror without liquid goo half way up it.
Had it not been for all the great info posted here I would have still been scratching my head wondering how to fix this...

How To Crack Your Windshield Mirror Repair

My 2002 SLK320 arrived with a bad mirror and floppy base. As a temp fix I found a 270mm clip on mirror worked well except it would flop when stopping or pulling away.

Was told the fix was to remove the mirror by turning it 90 degrees with a hex wrench in the back hole leaving it hanging by the wires. No problem as I simply cut the wires considering auto dimming more a danger then a help. And to remove the spring metal clip, squeeze it with a pliers and replace. First time I didn't squeeze it enough and had to do it again.

After the second squeeze it did not want to go back on the mount in the 90 degree position (another bad design) causing me to hammer it with the heel of my hand, got it on, twisted back into position and now only a slight bit of play. Couple of days later, I notice the windshield has a crack running down the center . . .

Appointment with Safelite Tuesday to replace, glass starts at $188 less $25 online coupon plus $9 disposal fee plus $34 come to you fee, taxes and such to $220. Will have him install a $12.99 mirror from Walmart that looks just like it came from your father's 1983 Buick with a dim flip switch, all in all cheaper then a used replacement mirror from ebay $290.
