Hi All,

I've owned a 2012 55 AMG for around 6 months now. Upon it's first service in my possession, at a different dealer than the one I bought it from, the rear brake pads were found to be 80 and 85% worn with heavily scored discs.

I was a little surprised to have gone through the rear pads in 36K miles and disappointed that the discs were also shot. But, as I have only driven 6K of those miles, I can't attest for the previous owner and paid the £900 to have them replaced.

So, my question is, after driving a further 1800 miles on the new brakes, is it normal on the 55 AMG to have far more brake dust covering the rear wheels than the front?

I've never had a car that covers the rear wheels in brake dust more than the front!

When mentioning it to the dealer I got the obligatory 'new pads bedding in' line, but I would have though 1800 miles was plenty of time for them to bed in!

Also, a long motorway drive with minimal braking will see the rear wheels covered at the end of it!

So, is this common on the AMGs or do you think there could be an issue?

I guess I should add that there doesn't appear to be any binding or unexpected noises and it seems to stop OK!

Hi Paul, I haven't noticed more brake dust on my rears than on the fronts, and I agree that typically you would expect more on the fronts than on the rears. Perhaps it depends what pads are fitted to your front and rears... if the PO had fitted low dust pads on the front (and perhaps rears too), and you have now had OEM pads fitted to the rear, perhaps that might explain a difference? Of course, there may be a much less simple explanation, but I'd hate to speculate...

I hadn't thought of that! Would be the simplest explanation.

I was hoping for simple too! Guess I need to take a look at the front pads before going any further!

I clean my wheels every other day and since I bought it new, the rear wheels are ALWAYS dirtier than the front. On my car, the rear pads wore out quite a bit faster than the front - so I replaced the rear rotors/pads 6 weeks ago at ~27k miles. When I went to check the front for wear, they still had quite a bit of pad left, so I haven't replaced them yet (I did go ahead and order the OEM parts though - so I'll have them when I need them). During the 'bedding in' period for the rear, I got even more dust than usual. But after ~1k miles, it's back to about where it was as far as rear brake dust is concerned - which is still more dust than the front.

That makes me feel more reassured. At least someone else has noticed a similar condition.

I also wondered in the Torque Vectoring feature contributed to the rear brake wear/extra dust situation.
