Crossfire interior panels swappable?

8609 Views 19 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  2_Big_Red_Dogs
Anyone know or tried using some of the crossfire interior pieces like the drivers side under dash or glove box assembly in a R170? Looking at some pictures on Fleabay and these parts seem to be identical at 1/3rd the price of Benz parts. My car is in need of the upper/lower center console, drivers under dash panel and glove box. Been looking around for these pieces and sellers who have them want big $$$$. If the Crossfire pieces are possible I may be willing to give it a try.

I've taken several Pre-FL consoles and dashes apart, and looking at the ebay pictures they sure do look similar. The top of the cluster bezel looks a little different but that's the only thing obvious.

Surely worth a try...
Yea I am 99% confident the glove box assembly and drivers lower dash pieces are identical except for the door latch on the glove box which is not a big deal. The upper and lower console pieces have some differences but with some creativity I am thinking could work. Good news is a local salvage yard has all the pieces on-hand, bad news is they are red but if I can scoop them up on the cheap I am willing to dye and do a color swap. Going to call the place in the morning and give it a try if the price is right. Fleabay has plenty of these crossfire parts and cheap but if I can get locally it would be awesome and before Christmas.

Myth busted...The panels do fit.... but not exactly perfect or without having to do some modifications. For starters the top of the upper center console needs to be cut as the SLK has the retracting cup holders which I don't believe a Crossfire comes with. 2nd the glove box assembly in the corner has some overlap and will need some trimming. 3rd is a small gap near the gauge bezel which Benz and Chrysler have completely different gauges and bezels. I will look into cutting a piece a plastic to inset and make it less noticeable

So for $250 Crossfire interior pieces will work but will require additional work. For me I needed a full interior and was not finding anything in the Benz market for a reasonable price. They are Red but I had planned on having to redo any SLK interiors I came across since most are peeling.

As far as the center console bezel pieces I have seen a post where someone has swapped the Crossfire into an SLK and looked really good so I will be heading back to the salvage yard Monday to grab that piece and panel around the shifter. If these are able to fit it will give the car a updated look and look awesome.

More to come..

Did the ac controls, radio etc fit without many modifications?
The Benz bezel trim does not fit correctly but the A/C controls and radio does fit into the cavities of the console with no problems. Tomorrow I am meeting a guy who has a couple couple parts cars and I am going to pull the rest of the trim pieces I need around the radio and shifter. From what I can see so far the A/C vent alignment will probably be challenge and I will need to shorten the bezel height to fit properly, this is mostly due to the cup holder situation but if successful this will be a great looking update to the car.

Update:

Scored all the Crossfire center pieces plus A/C controls, shifter bezel and knob for $120. Great deal on the parts considering I can now sell off my factory carbon fiber bezels and recover some of my cost on the interior swap panels.

As expected the A/C vent and radio bezel does require some modifications and you better have a Dremel handy and a pair of calipers for measuring.

I will post pictures latter of what needs cutting and filed but wanted to share this update for those who were curious.

OMG! This is an awesome mod!!

I so wanna do this, I feel the standard merc interior is just so dated, which I am sure many peeps appreciate, but I would love so have the crossfire interior.
Did you finished this project. Can you post the final completed project. Love to see how it come out. Thanks for the great info

Agreed. Anxiously waiting.
Sorry guys I was in China the past 2 weeks and just got back. Panels are now soaking in water to help lift off the red paint and I will be preparing the parts for paint/dye this week and installing this weekend. Still unsure how I will get the shifter bezel and trim to matchup, appears the shifter pattern that is cutout for the SLK and Crossfire are different. Would be great if I had the entire crossfire shifter to see if they swap out but I'm not ready to spend $200 to see if it works.

Will provide updates this weekend

Sorry for the delay guys, I have to many projects going on around the house but I did make some progress over the weekend with getting everything painted and put back in. I went with SEM graphite paint and very pleased with the results.

Still looking for a source on the shifter bezel and vents. Also not sure what the deal is with the gap between the glove box and the dash. Looking at other SLK's for sale on Ebay this appears to be a common problem. Is there an adjustment or tweak that fixes this?
How did you fit your convertible switch in the center piece where the cup holder was ?
Now you need a Crossfire radio, or a marine one, to match the silver. Looks very nice, but then again I did just trade a Crossfire on the SLK350 I have, and mine was that "Cedar" color you just painted over. I put a Kenwood KMR-D562BT in mine, looked and worked great. Actually, I still have the factory Crossfire Becker radio.

I was wondering the same thing. Any update on this?
