Hi, just wondering if anyone has photo's or a diagram of the control box next to the battery on a R170 SLK 230, as when trying a bypass method for opening the boot / trunk lid, buy grounding a thin grey wire with a mauve tracer (as instructed on a different site) all that happened was smoking from the associated control unit, and now i only have first and reverse and esp / abs / brake warning lamps lit that will not go out. I suspect I have fried the control module, but without a diagram, have no idea of its function, (other than it has no relevance to the roof) I have a 1998 R170 with the round O.B.D port in the same box of e.c.u's. A diagram of the box with labeled components, should help me sort this out, and in the near future, i could still need info on how to open the boot / trunk, as the operating rod from the manual boot / trunk lock has fallen off, and I was led to believe that grounding that wire, to override the luggage blind /tray was the solution. My car has no rear speaker holes so that's why i gave it a go, any suggestions / info greatly appreciated.

The grey / purple wire is correct to ground but you have probably done the wrong wire. I will photo the correct wire on my car. The wire is at the rear of the box. Be careful, some wires appear to fit the bill but only one is proper colouring.
I stick a pin into the wire then join a thin speaker wire to the battery negative.

Markja is correct. Ground pin 54. Grey/Violet to bypass the roller blind switch.

There are duplicate colors present so yes - use the pinout diagram to find the correct one. Letting the smoke out will ruin it...

Thanks to 1978L82, Markja, and efair, for your help, But sadly had connected to the wrong wire, and have fried the module shown (see below)
I did however perform the roof manual unlock, and partially open the roof, couldn't depressurise it though as pump in trunk, but opened enough to see, if not reach the rod that has come off, as there isn't enough room to access it as the "C" pillars touch the unopened trunk. Has anyone opened the trunk another way, it seems i need to open it to sort the roof issues, or maybe i blew something (in the module pictured) that affect's it ?
More info.
The roof control button operates the Front windows down, and nothing else, when held back to open, but when pushed forward, flashes and a pump and latching sounds are heard, and front windows go up, any ideas on this one guys ? This was the same as it did when i first got it, except the trunk was open and wouldnt close, i pushed the roof control forward, the catch plate lined up and i shut the lid... and the rod fell off.
Then i fried this module..
