I wish I knew what is the best.
Have tried:
Neat methylated spirits.
Distilled water with a thimble of meths.
Distilled water with a thimble of vinegar / lemon.
Spectacle cleaner.
Seemingly every proprietary glass cleaner know to man.
Rain-Ex.- (always as the last treatment in any case)
Pre-washing with clear water (tap & rain).
Used tissues of all types & cotton polishing cloths.
Strong sunlight is a harsh mistress & whatever I have tried still leaves smears.
Do you have a secret formula that should be seen to be believed or one that is transparently obvious?
I use Castle. Don't know if you have it on that side of the pond or not. It is in an aerosol can. I use old newspaper and make sure it is completely wiped dry. Even with other sprays I always use newspaper. It may seem odd, it it works well!
Well blow me I had forgotten about using newspaper, an old chauffer's trick & I don't think I was using a clean unused micro-fibre cloth meaning any residual polish was causing smears.
So it could be the method not the product I'm getting wrong.
Will let you know if your help has made things clearer for me.
Once a quarter, I clean all my windows with a steel wool #0000 with Rain-X. I spray the glass with Rain-X and rub the glass in a circular motion. You will be surprised how clean the glass is afterwards. It is like using clay on the glass. The last step is wiping the glass with micro fiber.

My method is as follows:
Start with clean microfiber and wipe down window with the dry microfiber only. Wipe horizontal on inside and vertical on outside of glass.
Next, do the same with your choice of glass cleaner, dosent matter which one.
Should be perfect, but if you do see streaks, you can identify which side of the glass they are on by the direction of the streak.
Pretty simple and effective
