So I've known for a while that my front brake rotors are nearing the end of their life and have been considering various routes for replacement.

In the end I decided to go with the stock Brembo 2 piece discs which I got slightly cheaper than from the main dealers by buying from Eurocarparts for £390 per disc, gulp! :crying:

Pads wise I decided to try EBC Redstuff ceramic pads which on paper offer slightly better performance over OEM pads with less dust and are apparently kinder to the rotors.

The discs arrived today and look great! I am going to fit them just as soon as I can which will most likely be over the Xmas break, or should that be "brake" :laugh:

Although I'm an experienced DIYer this will be my first brake job, so any tips welcomed. I will post pics and details of my project here when I've got round to fitting them.

Here are the new discs to whet your appetite, oooh shiny shiny! :smile:

Did you get the pads at Euro too? How much? I might throw a set in mine over the holiday if it's dry and mild. In any case, will be good to have them 'in hand'. Did you buy new sensors too?

FWIW, MBUK quoted me £242.00 for front pads - yeah right....

BTW, consider painting your new disc mounting bell/bolts with clear heat resistant lacquer before fitting them. For £800, might as well keep them looking nice :)

I also considered these:
Yellow Stuff DP41591R £115.30

From what I've heard MB aren't too bad for the sensors. Going to get them from a dealer I think. Just waiting to check my rear discs before I decide to change them or not before I order what I need.

Have bought new rear pads too

That's odd, from the EBC website, when I enter my reg, they offer me either 345 or 360 mm discs (as usual...), but when it comes to pads, just the yelowstuff part number you mention. Entering the Redstuff part number you supplied, brings up this:

Yes no 55 listed for Redstuff. I've seen them on another members car though and found them in the full EBC catalogue listed as fitting our car. Dimensionally they are the same as the Yellowstuff ones just different compound. Guess it's an error with their web configurator!

It's not too bad a job to swap the fronts out (I've not done the rears yet so can't comment there)

Nothing odd or unusual, but the bolts that hold the calipers on are REALLY tight!!

Figured they would be so bought a breaker bar :laugh:

Did the retaining screws and the discs themselves come off relatively easy for you? I am considering ordering new retaining screws just in case I knacker one taking them out! :smile:

Yes - they came straight out, as did the caliper pins etc etc ...

Defo worth applying some heat resistant finish to the hub and bolts to keep them looking good☺ I expect when you have done the job you will be forever looking at the wheels every time you get in or out ? look forward to seeing pictures of the work in progress.

The front disks & pads are an easy install , Front callipers require hex male socket about a 10 or 12mm , Rears I hear you need to remove the roll bar to get to one bolt , So my indy did the rears for me :) .

Thanks Andy, another source suggested to me that an 18mm socket (bit of a bogey size) was required for the front caliper bolts? I've bought one of those as most socket sets, mine included jump from 17mm to 19mm.

Good information about the rear caliper mind you I'm hoping to get to that bolt (E14 Torx) by removing the arb drop link rather than the arb itself. I'm still not convinced I need rear discs yet but need to do a closer inspection on them before I decide. Might end up just changing the pads this time round which should be a doddle wth the caliper on the car.

Hi All


@ Col when I did my rear disks I was shocked the state of the inner faces on both rear disks they had circle grooves right across the face & you can only see this with taking the pad out or the calliper off . The Front calliper bolts are Cap-head bolts ie hex hole/female in the top of the bolt & not a normal bolt head ie outer hex shape .

Thanks Andy. Sounds like I've had some duff information! Did you have half inch or 3/8 drive socket with male hex key from a std set that fit then, or did you manage with an Allen key? I can feel another tool purchase coming on!

I'll hopefully have time tomorrow morning to get a better look at my rear discs.

Hi All

@Col If the cap head bolt requires a 10mm allen key then yes I used a 1/2"drive male socket ,If not I used an Allen key (its was a few months ago) , As I only have the 10mm socket in my box .

Thanks Russ I have a torque wrench. Ordered some male hex key sockets now too. Looking forward to getting my hands dirty while I'm off over Crimbo!

Did a reccie this morning to check out a few bits and pieces. This involved jacking the front of car up and removing one of the wheels.

I wanted to check a couple of things out before I do the full job.

Wanted to try out my jacking strategy which involved the OEM jack a trolley jack and some axle stands that I modified a while back to fit in the sill jacking points.

Used the OE jack to get the car high enough to get the wheel off and gain access to the central jacking point with the trolley jack. Jacking centrally then enabled getting the modified axle stands into the sill jacking points.

Got some motor home levelling ramps on the way that allow me to get the car high enough to get straight to the central jack point next time round. Good little tip I found on another thread.


Solved the mystery of the recommended 18mm socket. Turns out that is for the hex headed bolts that hold the caliper mounting bracket to the hub carrier. Confirmed 10mm Allen key or male hex socket for the actual caphead bolts for the caliper.

Rear discs although ok on thickness appear to have worn unevenly and are lipped badly on the inside face. Going to order these from the U.S. me thinks!

A couple of bits left to get/arrive and I'm all set. ?

^^ That's useful. MBUK, at my free winter check, declared my front pads 25%, discs 'fine' and rear pads 60%, discs excellent. So I've probably got about 2k miles worth of leeway with my fronts. Oil change planned for Sunday...

BTW, Euro will sell at set of Eicher front pads for < £8 free delivered. I'm almost that tight, but not quite that brave... ;)
