right so like most r170 owners there slk comes with factory fitted radio which dont get me wrong does the job of basic functions and looks period correct but if you like me and want a bit more than the factory unit gives then this ones for you

i know most people go for a Becker or alpine or even blaupunkt but this can be very expensive and if you like me on a budget then look no further here's a one i fitted earlier:laugh:
its a pioneer deh x3600ui does everything has usb /ipod con/ aux/ and the main thing of course is you can adjust the led display to match our dash and clocks and the best bit is they cost peanuts and trust me the sound quality is spot on i took a chance and thought well i will see what the sound quality is like thinking it wouldn't be very good but honestly i was very surprised it sounded as good as my stock if not slightly better so all good

the price ?? £32  from fleabay theirs always loads of the d.e.h x models for sale on fleabay so no worries even right up to brand new but i was on a budget so bought the mid range but as you can see it did the trick
anyway here's two pics one of daytime view and night time so you can see the illumination match it might look slightly different on camera but trust me in real life its exact match of dash but you can adjust if you not happy to be more exact as there is over 210,000 colour combinations

was plug n play no messing around either

Lol. I was just telling DesignoSLK that this is the same stereo that was installed in the copper SLK 230 I just bought. I haven't looked for the instructions yet, but mine is constantly shifting colors while I'm driving, which is pretty cool. Is there a simple way to set it to the color you like?

No good having a cheap audio unit if the sound quality is poor . :(

I went from a Alpine unit to a circa £50.00 pioneer unit and the drop in sound quality was huge .
But if sound is not your foremost than ........ go for it .

There almost giving away these audio units .

Was you going from original mercedes audi unit to pioneer ?
yes it was original alpine audio 10 cd unit and this pioneer i changed it for sounds no different to me but then again the factory alpine unit in my slk r170 was almost 17 years old and the technology now is much better for much cheaper these days im not at all surprised the pioneer was more than capable of doing the job and even more with the added bluetooth which was one of the reasons i wanted a new one my friend has also got the same model slk and exact same head unit i had in it and even he said he could not here any difference as the pioneer has a lot of custom settings that if you mess around with you can get very good sound from but many people leave them on factory settings which like any brand new unit will sound terrible if left on factory settings plus the fact you can make the illumination identical to o.e.m as well was the icing on the cake for me
i have found you don't always have to spend alot of money to achieve the same outcome but each to there own i guess

I went from original merc audio on the 170 to an alpine unit circa £225.00 and the diff in audio quality even the ex heard the diff in sound upgrade .
Then reverted years later to a pioneer unit circa £50.00 and was an immediate drop in audio qaulity i found .

Was that impressed with the Alpine unit i kept it and still have now not just for the sound but the build quality to .

yes its pretty simple but just remember to change key display first then read out display second you cant change them together unfortunately , once you have selected each display you then change the rgb colours up or down to get the exact colour match of your dash lights for the slk r170 its turn the blue to 0 (blue off) and the red to about 22 and then adjust the green till you get the o.e.m then bingo  but watch the video link below to get the basics but if you get stuck which i did at first  then just give me a shout and il try and help you 0:)

I don't like listening to terrestrial radio, have no cassette tapes, and don't have much of a CD collection so the original radio in my SLK320 wasn't what I needed. What I did need was a unit with AUX input so I could plug in an Android phone and listen from my online libraries or Internet radio stations. I purchased a Blaupunkt Brisbane 230 from Crutchfield with the necessary wiring accessories. I installed it and after a few months became dissatisfied with the "techie" look and wanted the original look of the factory radio. I decided to have BECKER AUTOSOUND, LLC apply their $100, hardwire AUX modification to my original unit. They modified the unit (model CM1910) and returned it in about a week. I removed the Blaupunkt and installed the original. Found an old cassette tape and the AUX input works great! The phone output playing through the AUX input is MEASURABLY better than the FM radio through the same unit. Wider response and more bass.
