Hi All

I'm thinking in chaging my OEM 16" Wheels to a OEM 18" Wheels, to get a more sporty look

My major concern is regarding the chaging in the confort of the ride
Are the move to a 18" wheels going to take a lot of the confort of the car handling?
Should i chose for a 17" wheels instead?

Can you guys give your opinion and experience

Thanks

Hi Xeinsfer. I am going to sell the 18" AMG wheels on my 2007 SLK 55 (going to buy an aftermarket set). I can't comment on the difference in ride quality between the 16" and the 18" but you will deffenitly see a significant improvement in handling and breaking.

Have you sourced a set of 18" wheels yet?

The benefits far out weigh the non benefits. I did this over 5 years ago and haven't regretted it in the least......Happy motoring with your improved slk.

I have never plus sized more than 1. If you plus size to 2 or more you can run into problems and yes the ride will be harsher but the handling will be far greater. I always go for the happy medium (just increasing by 1), looks good, still rides good, handles great. However, it looks as though I will be plus sizing by 2 on the SLK to get the wheels I want but thats OK if you keep the overall wheel and tire diameter the same (lower profile tires). I also don't think it will affect the ride too much on them because they have a very good suspension. Here is my choice for my current stock 17" wheel and tires when the tires wear out or I sell them first: Vertini Dynasty All Slate Grey 19x8.5 19x9.5 Staggered Wheels

Most wheel and tire places guarantee up to a plus size 2 fitment on the R172 SLK. I'm sure it is the same for yours so you have many options:smile:

As 18s come as a standard option on the SLK, as long as you go for the same tyre size, I don't see why you should have any issues.

A little bit of comfort *may* be the sacrifice as there's obviously less rubber to absorb any impacts or bumps, but a bigger wheel looks better every time (in my opinion)

It's entirely up to you - only you know what your local roads are like - but if you're going bigger, one inch isn't going to make a huge difference - go the whole hog now and be done ?

A significant factor in comfort will be your local road quality.

Some parts of US and Europe have very very good roads, almost race track smooth, and so the ride comfort change will be minimal.

But places where road repairs are rough, there are lots of road joints, older concrete surfaces, low upkeep, soil movement so lumpy surface, then the opinions of 18" rims on super low profile tyres will be quite different.
