Low volume auto manufacturers can often struggle to meet the ever-stricter safety and emissions regulations largely intended for the mass-production automakers and the recent Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) has meant that Caterham’s European model range has had to be trimmed down to comply. While UK clients can still have the 314hp Seven 620 with its supercharged 2.0-liter Ford Duratec motor, the most powerful model for Europe is now the 234hp Seven 485, which uses the same engine but without a supercharger.
This might not have been what Caterham intended with their ‘less is more’ theory but their models have never just been about raw straight-line acceleration. Anyway, with a curb weight of just 1279 pounds, the 485 still has a Lamborghini Huracan matching power-to-weight ratio and rockets to 62mph in just 3.9-seconds. What most Caterham customers are interested in is how their Seven corners and to make this model even more capable on track Caterham have introduced the range-topping 485 CSR variant, packed with a host of additional equipment it is both the most luxurious and capable model available.
