I ditched castol a while back as it made more sense to buy mobil 1 with 5lt
And saved more money . >

Just bought 5L mobil 1 life 0w-40 for £35 inc vat from costco. That was after paying £16 for 1 litre as a desperate purchase from Halfords.

After 6 weeks of ownership I've not needed to top up oil yet.

This is a weird feeling for me because on my last car, a Z3 3.0, I'd get through a litre per 500 miles or so. My mum's old S2000 got through a litre every tank.

Will the R171 be thirsty on oil? I don't have much room for storage in my flat so I've been hesitant to get more than a litre at a time but the £20 per litre of Edge was seriously costing me!

Well in 7 years of ownership , Our 55 has asked please put 1L of oil in the engine next time you fill up with fuel only twice , that's about 50k of motoring. I do have the oil changed even year with the MOT .

Ah good, that pretty much puts the SLK on par with my Z3 3.0 for fuel/oil consumption combined.

If I try really hard I can even convince myself that it's economical!

Hi All @Pep No only twice over 7 years have I had to put an extra 1L of oil between oil changes , That's works out at 1L per 25000 miles.

After 12 months (including serviced early (at 10 months) to coincide with MoT ) and 6000 miles the car has taken less than one litre of oil.
My R171 was equally frugal, and from memory so was the (vanishing memory) R170.
For all their (many and varied!!) foibles Mercedes I believe, do not burn oil, unlike some VW marques I've encountered, or leak oil, like a certain brand new Porsche some many years ago!
