Hi,

I've been reading forums all over, and I can't seem to find a consensus, so I thought I'd sound it out here.

I have a 2004 SLK 32 - 60k miles.

When the car has been sitting over night, and I start it, when I put it in reverse I can get some violent shaking. This only occurs if I put it in reverse while it's still revving on initial startup.

Even if I warm it up for a bit, if I put it in gear there's a slight rocking and uneven sound to the engine, slightly rough idle. EDIT: Rocking and rough sound is only when in Drive or Reverse with the foot on the brake. On acceleration, neutral or park there is no hesitation to the engine.

This goes away COMPLETELY after it's been running around 5 minutes.

I know my engine mounts/tranny mounts are leaking, but they aren't flat yet. Some people say mounts, others say vacuum leaks, although I am getting no error codes.

I REALLY hate the shotgun approach mechanics take, when they just say, well, I think it's this, then 5 repairs later you find the problem. Does anyone know how to narrow it down?

The mounts don't have to be "fully compressed" to need replacement. If they are leaking, they will cause the symptoms you describe. I just went through this issue.

The hydraulic cushion designed into the mounts is no longer functioning as designed. The symptoms get better after a few minutes because the rubber in the mounts warms up and gets more pliable.

Not to be snarky, but I would say that ignoring a known problem is worse than a shotgun mechanic. You know they need replacement, so why are you looking for another problem?

If you've read other boards you probably already know that it's a mistake to try to save money with non-OEM replacement engine mounts. Do the transmission mount at the same time -- based on mileage and years it's due also, and relatively cheap.

Thanks!

The mounts weren't a "known" issue, the mechanic specifically told me they weren't an issue, just something I should keep tabs on, so I'm not sure I was ignoring them.

According to forums I've read, people have said the problems were anywhere from vacuum leaks, to gaskets, throttle controls, MAF sensors and on and on... I simply wanted to get an opinion from people familiar with my specific family of cars.

Nevertheless, thanks for the input.

Just because I recently got a bit ripped off for some repairs, I was wondering if you had a ballpark cost for the repair? I am considering doing all the engine and the tranny mounts.

I think the mechanic didn't give you good advice there. A leaking mount requires replacement, as you've discovered. Sure, the car still runs & drives, but with the fluid leaking out you get the issues you've described. Just as with a shock absorber, a leak means it's time to get a new one.

On the cost, I got three quotes (southern Arizona). These were the two engine mounts and 1 transmission mount, installed, with OEM parts:

Dealer: $880

Qualified and respected foreign car specialist: $770

Qualified independent working from his back yard: $175 if I supplied parts. My cost on parts was $248 shipped from GetMercedesParts.com, making the total for this option $423.

Because the job is not particularly different on an SLK compared to other cars, I let the "back yard" indy do it. I was satisfied with the work and there were no issues.

See attached pictures. These were "just leaking" too. The black rubber portion of the mount is partially collapsed. A new mount is about 3/4" taller.

It seems I may have same issue with my '06 SLK 350 65000. Rough idle on startup, but seems to go away after a few minutes of driving. Only notice it happening in drive/reverse with brake on or at a stop light/sign within first few miles. R U thinking I need to replace engine and transmission mounts ?

Hmmm.. Seems like MB engine mounts doesn't usually last long... That's really weird. I remember owning a '92 VW Golf III and it had original mounts and now problems whatsoever :)

Yep

Just as a followup - I did replace the engine and tranny mounts. I went to a well-rated independent shop and I think it was 400 or so... Fixed the problem. So that was definitely it. A big sign was when I accelerated, I would feel the shifter press backward with the force being exerted on the drive-train.

Anyway. Get it fixed.

Should make you think twice about the info the mechanic you mentioned gives you. :)
