I posted a question earlier regarding my 1998 SLK 230 Kompressor which may be too confusing. Anyway, can the roof be opened manually with the boot locked? I cannot open the boot to access the pull out vinyl cover inside the boot as there is something wrong with the boot lock which is preventing me from opening the boot. I'm assuming the roof won't open electrically due to the boot cover not being in position for it to operate. It could also be that the roof won't open due to the rod in the boot lock being dislodged or something. So can the roof be opened manually, bearing in mind that the boot cannot be unlocked or opened until I open the roof to gain access to the boot lock to fix it from inside the boot? During the opening process of the roof the boot has to move I think but it's locked due to whatever problem there is with the lock. Thanks in advance for any replies.

I dont think there is anyway you can lower the roof even manually without the boot lid moving. They are linked. If its the same as the 171 the hook that the boot lock ataches to is part of a rotating bar that in turn is linked to the roof. If the boot lock has failed you have a serious problem Have you tried unlocking the boot with the metal key ???

On the R170 and the R171, the boot lid catch never actually undoes while the roof cycles. The boot lid opens from the front and pivots round catch.

However, I think if you are operating the roof manually on the R170, you have to do some 'stuff' inside the boot space, along with winding the handle through the hole at the front of the headlining.

There are some posts on here (from years ago) showing how you can get in the boot when it seems to stop working.

The obvious first step is to 'jiggle' the key in the lock whilst flooding it with WD40 (other spray on water dispersants/lubricants are available!! ) - this works about 90% of the time.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I've tried opening the boot with the key. I think this rotating bar that you're talking about may have disconnected itself or a clip on it may have broken that holds it in place. At the weekend, with the vinyl boot cover in its extended position, which allows the roof operation, I couldn't open the boot but the roof worked electrically so I could access the rotating bar by half opening the roof and reconnect it but it may have come out again. A friend was looking at the car and I think he may have closed the boot with the vinyl boot cover in its closed position which now makes the roof unopenable and now I can't open the boot of course.

Hmm something has gone seriously wrong with the boot locking mecanism.

If you cant open the boot at all I am at a loss to know what to suggest short of removing the number plate and cutting an access hole behind it. But that is a bit drastic and a totally last resort.

I dont see how you can get into the boot unless someone else does. Is there any access through the bulkhead behind the seats I wonder ??? Anyone ??

I do not see where you said you tried the unlock button on the dash or used the key remote. I do take it you tried them. Without the window shade pulled in place the boot will not open for the roof to go down. I think you are locked out, other than cutting the boot open.

If the connection between the lock itself and the actual hook that holds it onto the rotating bar is broken I dont see anyway of releasing it without some damage and to my mind behind the number plate is the least on show once its repaired or buy a used boot lid from a scrapper

I've tried the key remote. Where's the boot unlock button on the dash?

If it wont open with the remote or the metal key I doubt it will by the dash unlock button
I totally agree with you but it's worth a try. In 5 years of driving this car I don't know where the boot unlock button is. Where is it?

as far as i know and this is from a 171 its the button on the dash that locks and unlocks the doors. I dont know of any other button unless the 170 hs one. But think about replacing the boot lid. MB dealers round here charge over £100 per hour labour and there is no saying they can get into it. If it was me as a last resort I would cut a hole behind the number plate. Get a body shop to uses a nibbler so as not to do any damage to the inside. If you know what it is thats come off then recoonect it and open the boot. Then Tape the microswitch down that the divider activates. That way you can operate the roof. Then either put a patch over the hole and put the plate back or buy a secondhand boot. after you have replaced whatever has failed

The same button for unlocking the doors. it is called a central locking switch. It is to the right of the red hazard button. It lock/unlocks doors, gas door, glove compartment, boot, and console and turns the alarm on when depressed to lock.

Like others said if key remote does not work have this most likely will not work.

Just had an idea If you know someoe who has knowledge about the electrics maybe they know a way to override the microswitch via a star diag and open the roof ??

Must be someway the microswitch makes a circuit to the roof switch of the motors. I am way out of my megre depth but trying to think out of the box If that can be intercepted or overridden somehow

Good thinking. This seems like my only hope now. Thanks for your replies, guys and the pdf for the manual which enabled me to find the central locking switch which as we suspected did not make any difference. I'll call an ex Mercedes tech tomorrow to see if he can over ride the microswitch or do whatever is necessary to get that roof to open. If not it's the cutters for the boot, lol.
