Buying advice 55

Going to look at a 2012 white 55 with only 20k on the clock and pretty much every option. What are the things to be aware of with the R172 55?

I keep coming across cars "with every option" but on closer examination of either a picture or the detailed description I find COMAND is missing, the radio is not upgraded to HK, no dash-mounted clock & (maybe not on the 55) no AIRSCARF so make sure what Mercedes gives you in one had they taketh away not in the other. Many 2012 still have a solid roof or tinted plastic roof not glass.
On the 55 there are extra chassis performance options that you almost never see specified. The £2000 AMG Drivers Package gives you an unlimited top speed and a driving lesson, the £4000 AMG Handling package gives you an LSD, better brakes and stiffened suspension.

The Dynamic Handling package is one option I've yet to see on any R172 and I know for a fact that mine is the only RHD CDi250 built in MY2015 with the garage door opener option.

The Driver Assistance package (Distronic/Lane Assist/Blind Spot protection) is another one that you almost never see on a "loaded" SLK.

What you tend to find is Airscarf, Parktronic, folding mirrors, Airguide and the media interface. The upgraded COMAND with 6 disc changer is another extremely rare option.

So, no, I doubt that there are any R172s in the UK with EVERY option.

I have always struggled to find all the options I wanted when I was buying demo SLs in the UK - they always lacked the one item I wanted but had others that are totally useless! Europe goes in for options in a bigger way.

This is the 55 that I am so tempted to buy. the original owner must have just said 'everything' at order stage!

Three things holding me back are that a) my cheque book is like the till in 'Open all hours', b) I just wonder if I might be better with a new 43 and c) I am trying to get the dealer to discount the value of Magic Sky and Keyless Go…

In answer to your question though - no, nothing. You know the 55 already, so look for the obvious and make a judgement on this… good luck.

I have actually changed my mind on the original one I planned to view (wasn't struck on the red seats), but am going to test drive this one tomorrow:

Forgot I can't link, but the place is called 'Mason Hitchin'.

Has fewer options, but seems to have most of the important ones to me.

Not sure if it has folding mirrors and it doesn't have the mounted clock. However, my main wants are airscarf, heated seats, xenon headlights and parking assist...check :)

I guess the next question...will I miss my xpipe and cat delete?
you can 1 time link urls.
want a datacard?
I will grab the vin when I go tomorrow.

This is the link:

Minus the gap...I see why it was starring it out now :p

No magic sky which would be nice. I am going to really push on the price too - especially having just fitted 4 new tyres on mine and new floating discs a few months ago!

hee hee me too!
Not sure if the link works, but I was originally looking at this one:

Mercedes-Benz SLK 5.5 SLK55 AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic 2dr (start/stop)

Cheaper, but with red seats (and more options). Not sure why it is £2k cheaper though? Do the red seats reduce the value that much :p

This is the one I will be seeing instead:

you read this right?

Please note

The data displayed above details the usual specification of the most recent model of this vehicle. It is not the exact data for the actual vehicle being offered for sale and data for older models may vary slightly. We recommend that you always check the details with the seller prior to purchase. I never used to like the R172 as much (mostly just seeing pictures), but I see a fair few in the flesh on my way to work now and it has grown on me. Curious to see how it drives in comparison to mine.

same note be careful

I think it is referring to the tech specs rather than the description of options. I usually just link through to the dealer website which is *slightly* more helpful.

You never know :D :D
that is why the datacard is valuable in that regard

I think the red seats work with most of the paint colours except white for some reason, bengal nappa works well with my grey. Both cars appear to be relatively standard with minor upgrades neither seem to have the AMG Handling package, sky roof etc. I am sure you can haggle them down a bit. >:D

Handling package worth it?

The cabin on the second one is a bit easier on the eye... the Bengal Red nappa leather, carbon fibre trim along with the HK speakers is all a bit much for my ageing vision

No2 looks classier... like you said, you just need to get a decent bit of movement on the price.
