Buying a SLK

1161 Views 22 Replies 16 Participants Last post by  TheBleedingN00b
Hi Guys,

I am new to this forum and I am glad I have found it!

I am in the process of buying at Second Hand 2006 SLK200.

It has 82,000km on the clock, However I am worried about all the things people say about Merc problems.

Could you suggest any problems I should look for on or in the car before buying the car?

Also is there anyway I can replace the old sound system with a new one to connect my Iphone to the car instead of the 6 disk radio.

Thank you! And you guys have a epic group here!

Welcome to SLKWorld.com: The #1 Mercedes-Benz SLK Forum from Valrico, Florida!

Some tips to make your visit here more enjoyable:
If you haven’t, please use the 'search' feature at the top right of the page for your questions as they have probably been asked before. Remember, ‘Search’ is your friend.
If you wish to become PM (Private Message) capable, you need 15 posts. To get those 15 posts quickly, just go to the ‘New members introduce yourself here’ section and welcome enough new members to obtain your needed posts to PM. You can always pm a moderator.
Want to post a picture? Start a new thread or make a post, click ‘edit’, click on the ‘paper clip’ or ‘advanced’ and/or ‘manage attachments’ then ‘choose file’ then ‘upload’ and ‘submit’! If Iphone pics, you need to rename any additional pics as Iphone names its pics all the same, image.jpg.
Want to ‘like’ or thank’ someone’s comments? Use the ‘like’ button to the right or the ‘Thanks’ button, bottom right of any post you like. This saves you having to comment.
New members should be aware that the 'New Posts' link next to the 'Search' link top right of the info bar is a great way to see all of the posts you have missed since you were on the forum last. Remember to click 'mark forums read' under ‘quick links’ when you leave.
Post your vin in the Vehicle Datacard Request section to get a free datacard (options on your car). You must update your profile with vehicle info and your location and post an introduction first.

Use 'search' our new friend as those questions have been asked before :D

what merc problems?

Get yourself the datacard for any car you are interested in and check the engine number for these issues in case you decide to go with something other than a 200

Hi jBanks!

I am very glad I found this forum, As I am a big fan of SLK's thus the fact that I want to buy one.

Cant wait to showcase the car on the forum if I buy it.

I have the vin number and I found the datacard, However I am still not sure what to look for on the datacard as I am not that great with car's.

Welcome from Belgium. Just buy one and join the club. SLK is fun.
Make sure service history is up to date, i had a slk 200 for 2 yeas ( when i purchase the car it was a high mileage car 95k miles and sold the car with 125k miles ). In 2 years i had to change the tires twice, one vacuum pump, a lambda sensor, a arm, a coil spring, sparks, so nothing major.

Hi and welcome from the UK Midlands! :)

As Jeff has already mentioned above, it would be great if you could add your location and car details into your forum profile, please (instructions included in Jeff's post above). It helps others to help you whenever you post or have any questions in future. Thanks! :tu:

Hello from Oklahoma! If you end up getting this car check and see if they have any maintenance on file either with Mercedes or a mom and pop shop. The cars are solid as long as they are taken care of with routine work and checkups. Test drive and press all the buttons!
Thanks for all the welcome messages!

Cant wait to drive the car and be 100% part of the community.

I am going to test drive the car for the 3rd time tomorrow and will be checking out the Sport/Comfort mode on the auto transmission.

Loving all the help from you all! :)

- I will update my profile soon!
- Basically 21 Year old from South Africa.
Love the SmartTop Mod!

However another mod question, The car comes with a silly OLD nokia phone cradle in the middle arm rest.
Could I mod that to accept Iphones? or Ipods? Or even just Aux?
Hmm is it just me or are South Africans flooding into the forum...

Welcome from Cape Town

When I bought my SLK, I had Mercedes give it an overview and I got a old friend (who's a damn near expert on cars) give his input - his input was actually far more valuable (he made me a list of repairs in order of priority) and all it cost was a bottle of Whisky 0:)

As to the head unit, I ended up replacing mine (keep the original in case you ever sell).

I seem to remember seeing somewhere that are conversion kits that allow you t use the original cradle with an adapter to provides bluetooth but I may be wrong
