I am in the negotiation process to buy a 2005 SLK55 with 70K miles. The car is fully loaded with all options - Prem II, Lighting Pkg, 6-CD, two-tone interior, Sirius, COMAND, the works... everything is on the car except 030 (which was not available for the MY'05, I understand)...

The seller is a private party and asking $23,500. I had the car inspected top-to-bottom at an MB shop and they found that the body and interior are in remarkable good conditions. Everything checked out pretty good...

However, for a 70K mile car there are bound to be stuff to fix, and here are the findings...

Front brake pads + rotor = $1,870
Rear pads (at 20%) = $250
Service E due = $165
New battery = $195
Brake fluid service = $90
Oil change = $100
Oil level sensor seeping = $200
2 rear tires (bald) = $500

Of the above, the MB tech said the most immediate needs to replace/fix are the front brake pads, rotor, rear pads, battery, oil change and rear tires. Total cost = $2800 + tax.

Last service history recorded was at 41K miles... (brake fluid flush, alignment, door trim panel replaced, body computer module replaced, front carpet replaced, recommended maint. performed)...

So what should I do? Go for it at lowered purchase price or run....

Thoughts, comments really appreciated...

I'd also verify that the transmission isn't due for service. If it hasn't been done in the past 40k miles, add $400 or so.

Fuel filter is due at 65k miles, was that done? I got quotes of $500 at the dealer, $350 at the indy.

Engine mounts are common at 70-80,000 miles.

No service for over 30k miles, about half the life of the car?

As essential maintenance is early on during the low mileage phases, when the car is reaching it's 100k and it's not being serviced, your asking for trouble.

Just my 2cents

High mileage but well maintained AMG would not put me off. High mileage and no maintenance for 30k miles would worry me.

How many owners has it had? I would also worry about a car that was sold in need of so much work..

Thanks guys.... it looks like a long list, but its really not all that. The seller will cover costs for the front and rear brake jobs (incl front rotor replacement)... and for all fluid changes. so I just have to cover the rear tires and a new battery. And I get all of this with an OTD price of $25K. Just exactly my budget.... The deal is done.... Car is at an MB shop to get all repairs done and ready by Saturday for pickup...

Altho' I don't like to mod my car, but I will be making the following changes immediately...

1) Clear corners
2) Short stubby antenna
3) Plastic rear wind-shield

Are there sellers on this forum who can sell me these items or do I just search for them on Ebay?

I will update my garage with the addition of this car after pickup this weekend. I am a happy camper. I will take excellent care of my new baby... I am so excited...:rb

Congrats!!!

I too purchased a higher mileage 280 that was a bit overdue on service. I almost stole the car when I look back at what I paid for it. I too brought it to the dealer and had everything checked out and all the service required brought up to date. I do not regret it for one minute. It was the best car deal of my life!!!!

Enjoy!!!!!

Theregans... Thanks for those nice and comforting words. I surely intend to correct all past transgressions of the previous owner and get that car in top shape soon enough. Right now I am busy shopping for accessories .... hehehe...

Always fun accessorizing...

:tu:Congratulations. You turned a lot of negatives into positives at zero cost. Two rear tires and a battery, that's a deal. Good luck and enjoy your SLK.

If the previous owner was a DIY or took it to an indy MB would not have records of service. It could have been serviced in the 30.0, miles correctly there just is no records with MB. I see a lot of owners here on this site do their on service and use indys. This means there will have problems when they sell their SLK's the money saved will cost them later in a lower selling price as MB does not have records of service becasue people will not buy the car.

I would not run from it. Sounds like a good deal. Any technician should be able to tell if there is "sludge" from lack of oil services on the car. I just have a few problems with the pricing. The front brake service seems really high. The E-service seems too low. The E service should include changing the oil and filter and the brake flush. Rule of thumb with the FSS on the cars is "A" service is 1 hour "B" is 2 hours "C" is 3 hours etc etc. I just want to be sure he/she is doing the service as it needs to be done.

I think MB has changed to only A and B service and other items are based on miles to do and not on a set sechedule of A, B, C, D, E, F, and so on. The old schedule was 10.0 or 13.0 miles and one year which camed first moved you to the next letter which had owner of very low miles to do service that were not need just because of time and no miles. Example Old schedule would have you change trans fluid at the end of four years when to car might have only 20.0 miles where it is only needed at 40.0 miles. E service would now be a A service. Brake fluid should be changed every two years. At 41.0 miles the report says recommended maint, performed that should have included a trans fluid change as that is recommended at 40.0 miles. Need to see if this was done.

Thanks Jeff. All 3 are on my immediate To-Do list. My biggest question is the SmartTop. I have it in a purchase Cart for $299 (from eagleday.com). Anyone local I can use as an installer?? And how much will install cost?

Any local SoCal 55 owner around to point me in the right direction to get the side marker and SmartTop installed??? Will be much appreciated.
