Hello all.............
Well I picked up my first Mercedes yesterday. I have never owned such an elegant car in my life. Here is the story of it. 18 years ago a very dear friend wanted to buy a new car. But it could only be a two seater. We looked at everything out there from Corvette's to BMW's. Then we happened across a Mercedes Dealership and they had a white 2001 SLK 230 with black interior. While my friend loved the car she hated the interior so she custom ordered the car I now I have which is a 2001 SLK 320 with black and tan interior. I remember her commenting that she got the "big engine" too. What an exciting day when she took delivery of this car. But the interesting things about all this is she promised this car to me when she died and while that is a nice thing to say she just passed away at the good age of 95 and she was 30 years older them me. It was a very emotional experience going to pick up this car yesterday as no one had touched or moved it since she last drove it.

This car is pristine as it's NEVER been wrecked or dinged up at all. It only has 51,000 miles on it and the entire car is like new. The rear trunk looks like nothing has been in there. The engine bay is clean and white. The car is in amazing condition. It was amazing to drive from the Oregon coast and the winding roads as it just sticks in corners like nothing I have ever driven before. To say I'm overwhelmed to own such a nice car is an understatement. My dear friend kept her word to me and gave me a "like new" car. It's been well maintained and I have all the service records.

Funny little side story is when I picked it up it only have 1/3 of a tank of gas. I drove to the gas station and I could not for the life of me figure out how to open the little door too the gas tank. After me searching for about 5 minutes the attendent offered to help and he knew more about the car then me and said being the door were unlocked that the little door was unlocked too. I was totally amazed.

Driving the car home I only had two issues with the car. One, the center vent was blowing really hot air out and I could not get any AC going and it was very hot outside. All I could do was shut that system off and open the passenger side window for some air. But it was still sticky hot in the car. The other issue that I noticed was the inside rear view mirrow was half shaded and I thought that odd. When I got home I read the owners manual and discovered this is an auto darkening mirror and apparently it's malfunctioning too. But the rest of the car is a dream.

I have been a professional auto mechanic all my working career but I never worked on Mercedes as I never had that training and Mercedes did things "different" then the American and Japanese cars I was used to working on. This car is so over engineered it's a work of art. While I have discovered about the "DUO valve" in the AC system I may just find myself a good Mercedes Mechanic and have these minor issue dealt with. But I will try to find the DUO valve and do some tests on it and see what's happening there and maybe take it apart and clean it as it could have debris holding it open thus causing the HEAT. Now the mirror I haven't found any information on it yet but it will get fixed too.

One other little side about this car is it's pristine condition. The spare tire, pump and tools are exactly where they were placed at the factory. The first aid kit have never been opened. it's like this little car has been stuck in a time warp with new tires. Just amazing.............

Thank you gentlement for allowing me on your forum and this chance to introduce myself. I so admire you men that just dive into these cars as they are just cars but you have had the training and have learned how to work in the world of Mercedes. At my age my biggest goal is to take care of this car and keep it in the pristine condition it's in. I am truly hapy to be a member of this forum.

Best regards,

Lisa

Great intro.

You'll find plenty of our SLK ladies work on their cars too, not just the men.
We also have folks like me, I park in the street, so select what I will/won't play with.

I got baffled by one of these fuel caps, first time I had on (not SLK).
So much so, I drove back to the dealers to complain. Doh!

Taking over your friends car is a lovely way to remember good times with them, as well as create new ones.

Many regions have meets. Cars , coffee and a chat stuff.
Your region is https://www.slkworld.com/u-s-west-region/
Just post a shout out if nothing is going on right now and see if anyone is free.
It's a great way to learn about the car and share hints, tips and stories.

Hi Lisa,

Great story! Your SLK probably means even more to you than ours do to us... you'll remember your friend each time you drive it.

As soon as the a/c is fixed and you can cruise with the windows closed you'll love it even more.

Enjoy!
Mike

Thank you all for the warm welcome. Yes the car has truly special meaning but my friend always admonished me that "you better drive it" and I certainly intend too.

On the AC a quick note that after some study the AC issue most likely is the DUO Valve. I went looking for it and it's right under the hood on the inside of the right inner fender well. I'm going to test it and pull the top off and see if one it's working and two if it has debris under the little valve holding it open. It certainly acts like that. Wish me luck.

But thanks again for all your nice comments. Yes indeed I'm proud to own a Mercedes.

Best regards,

Lisa

55 greetings from London, England, Lisa. Your car looks great. By the way, these cars benefit from frequent use (as do most things with moving parts), especially the roof mechanism, so don't be afraid to enjoy the fresh air at every opportunity.
