I've been doing some research on new brakes and rotors for my 2000 SLK230. I probably read WAY too much before I take on a new project. What happens when I research is I come across way too much conflicting information. "I love Akebono, they never squeal." "I hate Akebono, I can't get the squeal to stop!" Then my mind just gets all jumbled and I'm like aaaaah what do I buy?? And since I can't decide, I just don't buy anything haha! Anyway....I have a few questions. There are several "kits" on eBay that come with all four rotors and front and back pads. The are relatively cheap. Some are just under $200. Anyone ever tried them? Also, I love the look of the slotted only rotors (not drilled). But I've read that you might need to upgrade your calipers if you go with slotted rotors. Is that true? And last question....how do I know if I have one or two pin rear pads? I don't want to order the wrong thing.

It is nonsense that you need to 'upgrade' calipers with slotted discs. The only reason for slotted and/or drilled discs, apart from dome marginal cooling properties, is to allow the gas that is built up in braking to escape. Some pads produce a lot of gas and under extreme conditions it builds up to give the feeling of warped discs.

Brake squeel is due to high pitch vibrations of the brake pad. Some pads - the harder ones such as ceramic compounds - will tend to squeel more than others.

Akebono pads, like Rdstuff and Centric Posi Ceramic, are loosely called dustless pads. They are not - all pads will produce dust (they have to to be effective!) but the dust is not that corrosive black of OEM pads. It is a brown dust that can be blown away leaving the running gear clean. They tend to squeel a bit more. This is solved by greasing all edges and backs where they make contact with the caliper body. There are also claims that ceramic pads on drilled doscs will produce squeel.

OEM, and cheaper pads, will be softer and bite into the disc better, but they are generally dirtier and might wear quickly.

Depends on what you want to achieve. If cleanliness, then ceramic, but pay attention to anti-squeel grease. If you want just good braking, then buy OEM.

As to discs, buy good ones. The cheaper ones are just that - cheap. OEMs are good, or go for the recognised brands - Brembo etc.

I upgraded to EBC rotors and Akebono pads, info is in my mods thread. The pads are amazing for the lack of brake dust, I am highly impressed. 3 of the 4 corners are completely silent, no squeals at all. The left front has developed a squeal in the morning or times of high humidity that lasts for the first couple of times braking, after that it goes away. I will look at fixing that when I switch from summer to winter tires in the next couple of weeks. As for the rear pads, mine were single pin. I think you might be able to see it depending on the type of rims you are using. Using Autozone's website, I can see that the SLK32 AMG is dual pin, and the 230 (like my 200) is the single pin.

Thanks for the info guys! I'll see if I can take a look between my rims this evening to see if I can see how many pins I have. MikeWest: I love your grill and headlights! I saw pictures of your car in a post several months ago and was like "oooh I want my car to look like that one day" haha!! Slowly replacing all the "must haves" before I get to the "wants" for my car.
