Brake Light Repair

Your instructions were very helpful. My local MB shop gave me a price of 50 to 500 dollars to make this repair. The part was less than 20.00 and it took me about 1 hour to do the job.

I will appreciate it if you tell me how I remove side are nozzle. I need to replace my 2002 SLK230 brake light switch. Thanks a lot. Happy Holidays!

My 2001 SLK 230 also became locked in park. Fortunately this happened on the drive. To manually release the gearshift, look into the slot behind the gearshift lever. The slot is covered by a concertina type rubber dust cover. Carefully push this forward towards the gearshift lever and a small hole will be revealed in the cover at the rear RH side. I am told that some models feature a semicircular flap below the D. Insert a screwdriver vertically about 120mm and gently pull back on the gearshift lever - it will release. Obviously you need to depress the brake pedal at the same time!
I removed the brake light switch. This is not technically hard to do but space is very tight so take your time and try to relax - once you have achieved this, you will know exactly what I mean! A couple of tips to help with this task are; you will need to lie on your back with your shoulders inside the car. As most peoples spines don’t come with a right angle bend, I build a platform from two pallets adjacent to the open door and I covered this with a piece of old carpet. You can now lay flat which makes the job much easier. If you can open the roof, you will get more light and the task isn’t so claustrophobic. Finally, adjust the steering wheel to give maximum room below. The black plastic trim is easy to remove and the switch too. On removing the switch, I was surprised to see it looked as though it could be dismantled. A few seconds with a small flat screwdriver and the switch was apart. TAKE CARE as the spring inside will fly out. Although the switch looked clean, I sprayed the contacts with electrical contact cleaner and reassembled it. I have heard of people using WD40 on switches but be very careful as this product corrodes some plastics and makes them very brittle. Having reassembled the switch I refitted it and the gear selector is now fine. For the benefit of friends on the forum, I then removed the, now working switch and used a DMM to test the operation for future reference. It is important to note that, when fitted in the car, the switch plunger is depressed. Pushing the footbrake, releases the plunger. The attached diagram shows the switch in both states. The black rectangle at the bottom represents the release catch.
R170 owners, remember to carry a screwdriver in your glovebox – with one, you could drive safely and complete your journey. I hope this is useful to members. Happy New Year and drive safely. Steve

Ok friends. Yesterdays efforts with the switch rebuild havent cured the problem. I have ordered a replacement switch so please don't rely on the diagram in the previous post until I bench test the new switch. I will update this thread as soon as the new switch arrives. Steve

OK. The new switch arrived this morning. I tested it with the meter and my diagram is correct. The reason that my original switch didn't work was the plunger failing to extend to its maximum travel when fitted in the car. At just £7.98 from a well known auction site, it has been a cheap enough fix. Drive safely. Steve

The immovable shifter syndrome occurred in my wife's 2002 SLK 320 tonight. I read your detailed description before attempting to rescue her and the car. It took a little finnagling, then after a few attempts the shifter was moveable once again. My wife was thankful. VERY thankful ! And now I thank you for your post.

Thanks all that have posted on this and other threads.
Yesterday I fixed my brake light switch in under 1 hour!!! That is removed, cleaned &lubed it, replaced and checked full operation.
It does help that I am a very flexible 54year old!!
I will spend the money saved on
real ale and fuel!
