Brake light problems

2870 Views 11 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Avel Du
I got this 2001 SLK320 that had a brake light warning showing on the cluster so I found out the driver side rear brake light was out so i switched out the old bulb for a new one but the light still wont turn on and the brake warning icon on the cluster is still on. I checked for any recalls for the car and there was one for the brake lights back in 2006 and it seems like a common complaint on the recall site too. Does anyone know any possible issues?

How would I be able to tell if the problem is the brake light switch?
More likely to be that the printed circuit has been compromised by arcing. It's an easy fix.
Remove the unit, bridge the broken part with solder and smooth down, apply some electrolytic grease, reassemble and it's done!

If it was the brake light switch, wouldent my passenger side brakelight not work also?
Also have you checked the bulb holder itself ?
Believe it has two or three contacts on it ?

Make sure they are all good .
Then check the printed circuit board it makes contact to .

Also it could be another bulb in your sytem throwing up the dash fault ?
Side lights
Number plates ?

Do the simplest things first .
Check all your bulbs first .
Even if they work they could be faulty as in resistance etc .

In the US there was a recall for this problem (not, for some reason in Europe!). It's a known fault with the R170, but easily fixed.

Glad you fixed it! Have a brew!
Cheap and easy route is always best.

Handy to learn soldering skills with the R170. We ended up replacing the unit.

They are old cars and from what I've read on this site soldering can be an issue.

It's also worth checking whether the sponge around the pse pump in the boot is wet/damp.
It'll save you time and bother in the future if you check it now.

Gummi pflegging and greasing is also well worthwhile, as is checking all the drain holes.

There's some good guides in the R170 pages, just use search.
