Hello
I am collecting my r170 next week and after much reading i have a question.

Did all R170's have the bose amp and speaker system.
My old MR2 had this and i am aware of the RCA output rather than Speakers etc.

how can i tell if mine has the bose system??

Not all cars have the optional Bose sound system - pm me your VIN and I'll pull your datacard for you.

If you have Bose, you have D2B fiber going from the head to the amp.

I have a '98 SLK it has the Bose Option (according to the datacard) and the Bose 'subs' behind the seats. It *does not* have any additional wiring beyond the standard ISO plugs. In fact there are only connections in the speaker plug for front speakers.

I just replaced the standard "Audio 10" unit with a Becker Traffic Pro (out of a Freelander actually) and it all works perfectly. Much to my surprise TBH. I have yet to investigate if there is an amp for the back speakers but if there is it must take a tap off the front speaker connections which is a bit rough!

Anyway, in your case (according to the VIN) yours doesn't have the Bose system. Just "533 front and rear speakers - without radio (с 01.03.1994)" (for comparison, mine says "810 loudspeaker, sound package sound package (bose) (с 01.12.1986)"). If you are talking about adding an aftermarket radio it will almost certainly be a straight plug in without any adaptors required.

I must admit I didn't check and it works. I don't know the details but it might just be a reaction to VW/Audi's habit of putting a 12V feed in the position where the antenna switch on lead should be (risky for your radio). If you want to be belt and braces, make sure you have permanent 12V, switched 12V where they should be and nothing (or a very low voltage) where the antenna connection should be - this is on the Merc plug.

You don't say what replacement head unit it is but most are pretty consistent. You sometimes have the option to swap around or combine the switched/permanent feed. You won't do any damage if you get that wrong and it'll be almost immediately obvious (won't hold memory when you turn off the ig.)

My car has the Bose speakers and the 810 option on the data card so where is the Bose amplifier actually located and what are the specs of the unit in terms of power output etc.

Wdfahmen, FIY the post is 4 years olds.
But let me answer one of your questions - the stock BOSE amp is located in the passenger footrest area. Carefully lift up the carpet, and you'll see white rectangular piece of styrofoam. Remove it and there is your BOSE amp =D
As far as specs go I think it's still a mystery buried deep behind Mercedes-Benz factory walls.
