Moved your thread out of general discussion to here, the r170 general discussion section

Welcome to SLKWorld.com: The #1 Mercedes-Benz SLK Forum from Valrico, Florida!

First please update your location and vehicle (year?: 1996-2016, model?: 32, 200, 230, 250, 280, 300,320,350,55) in your profile as it helps the members answer your questions which usually are based on that information if you haven’t. This takes about 30 seconds to do.
Follow exactly to update: ‘Usercp’ at the top of page, then ‘edit your details’ on the left side, ‘additional information’ near the bottom, edit your ‘location’ and ‘vehicle’. Info in your garage does not update your profile.

Your 1st thread should be your introduction so we can welcome you properly so post an introduction in the ‘New members introduce yourself here’ section, if you haven’t already. New Members Introduce Yourself Here - Mercedes Benz SLK Forum

Agreed! No drilling!
Stating the obvious, but you do realise there is a handle recessed next to the key barrel?

Only mention it because the windscreen fitter didn't and tried a few too many 'tricks' for my liking, before he asked me.

Yeah definitely don't drill without trying all available possibilities first. Sometimes you can get quite a lot of gunk inside the barrel, might be worth cleaning out. I'm thinking some sort of lubricant such as WD40 and compressed air. I'm sure there are better ways out there though.
No more news...???

I guess Peewac finally got the boot open, then locked himself inside....:wink:
Would be an interesting discussion between him and any passers by though!

the roof can be opened manually, but you need to open the trunk to do it.
I believe the way that markja and ichris are referring to "tricks" the car into thinking that the trunk cover is in place, so the roof will operate. I don't believe that the key itself operates the lock, it signals the PSE to activate the system. If the line to the trunk isn't working, it cannot be unlocked. The "trick" is to jump the roof system with a wire under the hood. Mark and Chris may know the specifics. Once the trunk is tipped back, it can be manually unlocked. If the pump isn't operational, it may be a 2 person operation, one to operate the switch and the other to pull back on the trunk if the hydraulic system isn't working. Good luck.

Tim
El Torro is correct. There is one wire under the bonnet that is earthed to fool the system into thinking the cover is in place. MAKE SURE you do the correct wire. Wrong one can cause big damage to electrical systems!
I use a pin to spear the wire core inside the plastic casing so no damage to the wiring loom. (Except a very small pin hole)
Thanks Tim,
I have tried the grey and purple wire to earth but no luck,It looks like I may have to drill, like I have read in a couple of old threads,
but don,t know where to cut hole and what to do when cut.
thanks Mal
