After trying everything from Gummiphlege, to refitting, to hydraulic grease, full and half covers etc finally got the seals replaced by a Merc tech through the garage I got the car from.
Leak immediately stopped on one side but seemed to be coming over the top of the seal on the other although as he was using a hose it seemed to overwhelm it. Adjusted the boot stops up and so far so good. Sitting at 21mm each side so hopefully okay for a while.
Will carry on using the covers though as stops me worrying. Don't use the car daily so not a hassle.

Now to replace the boot gas struts lol.
