Best place to tap into light fade wiring for new puddle lights

1944 Views 11 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  jbkufahl
Bought some updated mirror covers with the arrow design, and this version includes the puddle lights, which I currently don't have. Mine have signal only. I would like to tap into the function that kicks in the dome light when opening the door, or using the fob, then fades down in 30 seconds. I would prefer not to have to pull the door panel, and was wondering if there I can tap in at the dome light and try to "fish" wires to each door. If anyone has a better idea, I am open, or if the door panel is the best option, I would tackle it with some idea of the best way to pull it.
I am working on a 2002, SLK230 Kompressor. My biggest challenge is the age of the clips and what can snap off since the panels have never been removed before.
Any video links to any of this would be appreciated.
Thanks again

Just a quick update, I found a U-tube video for door panel removal that is incredible, and done very well. It is specific to my model which is even better, so I thought I would pass this on.
I must be doing something wrong, I searched for "SLK door panel removal" using any or all of the words, and found no posts. I have done the same thing for dome light removal with out results.

Progress so far

I was able to test the power supply in the dome light which consists of 4 wires. The 2 end wires are constant hot, but the bottom wire switches off when the dome light is activated, and fades back on in reverse of the light fading off. The top wire stay constant, and the two middle wires do not change.
I would like to tap into the dome light to wire in a new set of puddle lights, unless there is another place to do this.

I am winging it on my own and making progress

Since there doesn't seem to be anyone that has a suggestion on this post, I have just started tearing things apart. I figured out how the dimmer function works on the dome light, and temporarily spliced into it with my new mirror covers, and got the puddle light to fade along with the dome light. It also reacts to the fob when I push it, so if this all holds up when I do it with both sides, I will have new arrow mirror lights with puddle lights.
I will post pics and dialogue if it all works. If it doesn't......oh well, I learned a lot about removing trim and where some of the wiring goes for future reference.

don't give up! I saw Chris (ichris93) at the game and he will respond I am sure
Jbkufahl - Can't wait for your documentation, I also thinking about new side mirror covers with arrow signals and puddle lights. Might want to tap into under the dash lights. Please let me know how you make out on figuring it out. Thanks.
I hope to get it done by the weekend, and of course since I am in Colorado, before the Super Bowl!
Broncos won the Super Bowl, and the puddle lights work great. They fade off with the dome light and turn on with the key fob and opening door. Just like I knew what I was doing.
I posted more pics and some explanation in r170 mods.
