The return of the Maybach name to Mercedes-Benz means some reignited ultra-luxury rivalries. In the latest episode of Head 2 Head, our colleagues at Motor Trend put the new 2016 Mercedes-Maybach S600 up against the 2015 Bentley Mulsanne Speed to see which uber-sedan delivers the most special experience.
Host Jonny Lieberman starts off examining the impressive size and presence of the 2016 Mercedes-Maybach S600, which is the ultimate flagship S-Class with its extended length, ultra-smooth V-12 engine, and sumptuous rear seat. Sitting in this rear seat proves to be an important test, as most owners of these cars will be chauffeured around.
Both sedans offer some ridiculous amenities for rear-seat passengers, like champagne coolers and included glasses, plus built-in tablets that can be used for various entertainment and control functions. That’s not to say these luxury sedans aren’t impressive from behind the wheel, as Lieberman finds when sitting in the driver’s seat of the Bentley Mulsanne Speed. The British brute’s twin-turbo, 6.75-liter V-8 engine makes an insane 811 lb-ft of torque, which helps the nearly 6,000-lb car get out of its own way with authority.
Which is more important in this segment: sumptuous comfort or a special driving experience?
